But MediaSmartServer.net has a post with a solution which allows all your WHS shared folders to appear under one smb share, which you can read here.

TFS is a team collaboration server that provides work item tracking, source control, reporting, process guidance and more. Version 2010 Beta2 can be installed on WHS by using a remote desktop connection and website “Gaffer-Tape Engineering” takes us through the steps and also explains how to export the Home Server certificate which is also required.

I have looked at everyone’s comments from part 1 and have to say I agree with them, so I want to clarify what it is I am trying to convey. Hyper-v isn’t going to be for everyone, I except that, and I also except that hyper-v is not going to be for the average user that only uses WHS for just backing up, maybe a laptop and desktop, then maybe accessing some files on their WHS from work. At the same time, that same person, probably won’t be reading this article, this article is for enthusiasts, professionals and anybody else interested in enhancing their use of not just WHS but a completely different way of working with multiple OS’s.

I want to clear a few things up now, firstly I mentioned in part 1 that hyper-v offers more flexibility, and by this I mean gives you more control over how much how much RAM, Disk Space and most importantly what percentage of the CPU is allowed to be consumed by a virtual WHS. These three things are extremely important for me in order to use my server effectively and efficiently. The reason for this is I might want to allocate a higher percentage of RAM and CPU resources, to my Virtual Server 2008 Active Directory machine, because I know I am going to have people remotely accessing this server for use with terminal services. I understand that not many would have this scenario play out, but the principles are there for you to apply this to your own situation.

Energy saving was something else that was commented about in part 1, energy savings are none comparable to having 3 or, maybe 4 separate machines, each having powered at one time a Hard Drive, Motherboard, CD drive and other additional devices. This again is not a direct reflection of WHS but multiple OS’s combined, with effective use of resource allocation as above, makes for a major saving in electricity bills. Again I except that this is not the case for the average user, but from experience the majority of WHS users are professionals and enthusiasts at the moment, all of whom this article is applicable.

Ok then so picking from part 1, you should now have hyper-v installed on your machine, if you have had any problems installing hyper-v you can see full instructions here, these instructions are from a beta install but haven’t changed since as you only need to follow from 1 – 4. I do just want to point out at this stage, if you are running windows 7 pro or ultimate, you will need to download the “Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7” and install, this will provide you with the hyper-v remote management console.

You should now be looking at your console as below, you should also be able to see that I have called my hyper-v server “HOST_SERVER” the name of your server should be displayed here at the moment.

Now all you need to do is create a virtual machine and install WHS. First of all you will see in the far right hand side “New”, click New and then “Virtual Machine”

You should now see the above, enter a name for your Virtual WHS and change the store directory where relevant, and then click next.

You can now allocate the amount of RAM you wish your Virtual WHS to use, I would advise around 2GB if possible, then click next.

You are now able to select your network adapter, at the moment we have not set this up, so leave as “Not Connected”.

At this point it asks you about a Virtual Hard Drive, from here you can create, use existing or attach one later.

You will also notice that it is asking how much space you would like to allocate to the drive. Now, don’t worry too much, this can be changed later, so you can extend the amount of space within the drive, even after WHS has been installed, although you will need some partition editing software such “Acronis Disk Editor” so this isn’t a screen to get hung up about. My advice at this point is, if this is the first virtual disk you are creating for your virtual WHS, and for most of you it will be, I would allocate a small amount of disk space maybe around 40GB – 60GB, for reasons I will go through later, just remember this space isn’t instantly taken from your physical hard drive, the virtual disk grows as you add data to the Virtual Disk through WHS this is called a Dynamically Expanding Virtual Disk.

Once you have done click next.

At this stage you are able to install an OS immediately using an ISO, Physical Disk, Virtual Floppy or a Network Install. I always choose “Install an Operating System Later” the reason for this, is I like to look over the settings of the virtual machine before it is booted, also we still need to add a network adapter that we haven’t yet setup.

Once you have clicked finish you should see the Virtual WHS in the Management Console, and in the top right hand side you will see “Virtual Network Manager” click here to open this and to create your virtual network adapter.

Now at this point I want to point out the importance and advantages of having 2 network adapters in your host server, 2 network adapters allow for 1 to be used for all your virtual machines including WHS, and 1 solely dedicated to your host server. The advantage of having a separate network adapters for the host server is that internal remote administration and management of the host server can be done on one network adapter, and all other communications for guest sessions will occur over a different network adapter. This setup provides isolated administrative control to the host server from the direct access, communications, and control of the guest sessions. The other reason in a different environment such as business, with only one adapter, once one person has control on that network, they could then take full control of the host server, and all other virtual machines running on that host server, but that is a completely different example altogether but still a security feature never the less.

You should new see the above, there are three different types of adapters you can create, but we are just using external, so select and click “add”.

Now you get to name your adapter whatever you like, select the relevant external adapter you are going to use for your virtual WHS, remember if you have 2 adapters try and leave one completely separate from your virtual machines.

Once you are done click ok.

Now in the Hyper-v management console, right click your virtual WHS machine and select settings.

Here you can check all the settings for your virtual WHS, also you can assign the network adapter you have just created, change RAM and BIOS settings that sort of thing.

At this point we have only got one hard drive assigned to the virtual WHS, and for the installation that’s all you really need, I would advise adding more virtual hard drives later after the install, I will explain why and go through the install in Part 3.

Ok I have been running my WHS on Server 2008 Hyper-V for around 12 months now and before that I ran it in Virtual Server 2007. First let me tell you a bit about the hardware I am running it on, I use a HP Proliant ML110 with a Xeon 3065 2.33Ghz, 8Gb RAM, 1 x 250Gb HDD, 2 x 500Gb HDD and 1 x 1TB HDD, I have 2 network cards both are Gigabit and 1 of them I have dedicated solely for the use of the host server i.e. the physical hardware, this stops any hardware bottle necks and allows me to be more flexible.

The reason I use hyper-v is simple I use lot of operating systems both remotely and at home, I need and use XP Pro, XP Home, Vista Home Premium, Vista Ultimate, Windows 7 Home and Windows 7 Ultimate I also use most variants of server OS i.e. server 2008, server 2003 and sometimes server 2000, ok so I use a lot of OS but this is only for work reason but I would still run WHS on hyper-v even if this wasn’t the case and the reason is simple flexibility, ease of use, energy savings, I am sure you will see for yourself as we go through this guide.

I sometimes use me hyper-v server as main machine when I don’t need to do anything intensive I don’t mean use the Server 2008 OS, I mean just open up hyper-v manager right click my windows 7 machine and away I go, sometimes I even think I wouldn’t need to use my desktop if I didn’t have to do intensive tasks.

There are 4 different types of hyper-v but the 2 that are mainly going to concern those wanting to run WHS on, is Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 Core now this is the one most of you are going to want to run because plain and simply, this version is free. The second version is Microsoft Server 2008 R2 Standard and hyper-v comes with this version and this version allows for much more things like Active Directory and Exchange Server (this does not come with Microsoft Server 2008 R2 Standard but is usable on this version) this is the version I run but only because I get it very cheap due to my MAPS subscription.

Setting up is very simple and easy the core system you can’t go wrong with it is a case of clicking next, next and next again, a few more question with server 2008 standard but nothing more than when installing WHS.

Once you installed the core version you will find you have no user interface the reason for this is because it is the most basic version of hyper-v the only way to use this version of hyper-v is to install the hyper-v management console on your Vista or Windows 7 machine only (be aware you can’t install this on Windows XP) you can download the app from here once you are connected you need to connect to your remote hyper-v install and create a virtual machine which I will go through in the next part of this post.

Imagine this:-

You have your Home Server configured to wake up for a couple of hours a day to perform backups and then go back to sleep, which is made possible via the LightsOut add-in. However to use your Home Server outside of these hours you can send it a WakeOnLan (WOL) request to wake it up without physically switching the machine on.

But how do you send it back to sleep?

By using a third party application called Poweroff and the add-in Advanced Admin Console you can easily send your server back to sleep via a toolbar button. And if you want to know all the details, they are available from here.

Kam Lau from KAMLAU.COM has a great guide on setting up eSata port multiplication with the Acer Aspire easyStore using a eSATA PCI-X port multiplier card included with a Sans Digital TowerRAID Direct-Attached Storage (DAS) unit.

What does this mean?

Basically when your storage capacity runs out on the Acer you can use a DAS unit (like the Sans Digital TowerRAID) for additional storage space. In this example 4 hard drive slots in the Acer and 4 more in the Sans Digital TowerRAID TR4M-B. An impressive 8 hard drive slots!

You can read the full guide here.

FireFly enables an easy way for you to access your server’s music on iTunes and although the latest version from fireflymediaserver.org dates back to 2007, Andreas explains how to install a later version from September, 19 2008, which should stop a crashing issue for some users.

On this site and others you may have seen reference to the Microsoft Live Mesh, and how although it is not officially supported, you can now use it to synchronize your Windows Home Server, (WHS), machine into your mesh. However, what might not be clear are the advantages of using this technology.

Generally in most households there is someone who is usually a little bit tech savvy, (the kind of person who might buy or build a WHS machine for instance…!); And that person generally has to look after all the machines in their household, and usually many other machines for family and friends. This is a scenario that is very common and often leads to great degree of stress for that person!

Microsoft Live Mesh has a number of functions all of which are useful for a person in this support kind of position. The three main capabilities are:-

synchronization of data between multiple machines

limited online storage

remote desktop capabilities

Data Synchronization

This gives you the ability to synchronize data over multiple machines without having to think about it – it’s all automatic! As soon as I save any data in my designated folders on my PC, minutes later it is automatically synchronized across the Internet to any other PC that has already had these designated folders defined as part of their mesh setup. These folders can be on any PCs or Macs, so you can invite multiple family members to be part of your mesh setup. Currently, it is also free of charge to use.

Where it has the greatest advantage in my family, is on my wife’s netbook. My wife is an artist and consequently take a lot of photos of things that she will later turn into paintings. So at the end of her days photography, she will download the pictures from the memory card onto her netbook. But to ensure that this data is now secure, I have set up a Microsoft Live Mesh folder on her PC, that synchronizes the pictures folder on her netbook to a dedicated folder on the WHS machine at home. So, as soon as they netbook machine sees an Internet connection of any kind, it talks to the mesh website and synchronizes the photograph back to the WHS machine without any reference to my wife. This means that the days work is automatically backed up onto a machine that already duplicates data across multiple drives, i.e. the WHS machine. This means that once this process is complete should the netbook get damaged or the hard drive fail, all the pictures are safely stored away on one or more other machines.

Of course there are many other scenarios that you can apply this to, but this is a very simple example.

Microsoft Live Mesh is also LAN aware, so although it needs access to the Internet to talk to the controlling servers which ultimately control the synchronization process, it will be aware that two computers that need data synchronization are both within the same network, and won’t send data up into the Internet and back down to the other PC.

Online Storage

On the main mesh website, www.mesh.com, Microsoft have given you 5 GB of space to backup anything that you wish to keep online. So you may want to keep your important documents on this centralized storage for instance. This 5 GB limit doesn’t restrict any other synchronization that you have going on, it is merely just another endpoint for the data to be synchronized to. So in the example above, my wife’s photography collection currently fills up nearly 30 GB of hard disc space. However we do not use the online storage as a storage endpoint, I use both my WHS machine and a family desktop machine at home. Simply put you are not restricted by the storage space available online.

Remote Desktop Connection

Also built into Microsoft Live Mesh is the capability to connect to most desktops within your mesh. So as my work laptop is part of my mesh, I can connect into machines within my home network and control them remotely. This can be a powerful tool in its own right, and if you include other family members PCs within your mesh, (obviously with their permission!), You can remotely log in to their machines and fix whatever is their current problem, unless of course the problem is a lack of Internet connection! This saves you driving out to fix the situation as perhaps you ordinarily would.

Summary and warning!

So hopefully this article has given you some insight into how Microsoft Live Mesh can make your life a little simpler in support of others, but please do bear in mind that:-

Microsoft Live Mesh is not currently officially supported on WHS machines, but appears to work without issue. Regardless of this any decision by you to use this technology, will be on your shoulders!

Even on supported machines Microsoft Live Mesh is still considered to be in beta, and subsequently is currently free of charge. If Microsoft do take it out of beta they might decide to charge for it, (although frankly I would probably pay for it anyway!). There is also a small chance that Microsoft will ditch the product completely…

Any changes you make on files and folders on one machine will be synchronized to another machine within minutes. More often than not this is a good thing, but if a file becomes corrupted or is deleted, Microsoft Live Mesh will synchronize this to any other machines that are synchronized in the mesh. Although, this of course it shouldn’t be a problem for anybody who has a sensible backup policy including WHS of course, which will have backed up previous versions of files in the nightly backup cycle that we all do…

Personally I think that everybody should be using Microsoft Live Mesh if they use or have access to more than one PC, and certainly should have their data synchronized across multiple machines for security. Why not even consider linking up with family and friends who live elsewhere, to share non-sensitive and non-copyright data and ensure that in the event of disaster there will always be a copy of your documents, photographs, music etc available to you in another location.

I have just seen a really interesting post over at jesseweb.com that explains how to turn your Windows Home Server into a Domain Controller. This looks really good but there are a lot of unknowns with this such as how roaming profiles will work with this whether they will even work at all and will you even be able to see the Users and Computers console. What effect will this have on things like the drive extender and this is certainly not something to be tried on a working Windows Home Server and is only for the IT savvy of us all.

I will be interested to see more about this and what this could do for your Windows Home Server in general, the obvious thing to remember is you would only be able to take full advantage of a domain with XP Pro, Vista Business and Vista Ultimate as these are the only OS’s with this capability.

Article: Here

By installing the PlayOn Media Server onto your Windows Home Server (Service Pack 1 or later) you are then able to watch Netflix, Hulu, CBS, YouTube, CNN, ESPN and Revision3 amongst others on your PS3, Xbox 360, HP MediaSmart TV, Popcorn Hour or other UPnP/DLNA compliant device.

This is all done via the PlayOn software pulling RSS feeds from the content providers and then presenting them to your DLNA-compliant networked media devices. So how do we use it?

You first have to install Windows Media Player 11 onto WHS and then disable Internet Explorers enhanced security configuration.

Once complete you can then install the PlayOn Media Server onto WHS by using Remote Desktop.

The PlayOn interface will then appear on your UPnP/DLNA device – Simple!

The software is free and fully functional for 14 days although after this, a one-time $39.99 licensing fee is required.

Please note that channels like Hulu and CBS, geographically restrict their viewers to within the United States.

The Home Server Show website is reporting that users of the 64 bit version of the Windows 7 Release Candidate (Build 7100) are having a problem connecting their machine to their Windows Home Server.

Although the connector software installs correctly the client then alerts you that your Windows 7 machine and WHS passwords are not the same, although they are. When trying to enter the passwords in the prompt to fix the problem, the WHS password is not accepted.

Website Lifehacker describes a subversion server as:

Think of Subversion as a wiki-like repository for your files. Each time you make a change to a file or group of files that you’re happy with, you can commit those changes to your Subversion repository. If you don’t like where the changes got you, Subversion can compare your current version with any previously-committed version and pick out the best of the best so you never have to worry about finding your way back to a good or working version of a file.

Adrabba.net has a great tip for those of you sharing a printer which is connected to Windows Home Server to a 64bit operating system on a client machine.

Operating systems have the ability to host drivers for the printers they share so that when you connect to the printer, the driver is downloaded. Once you Remote Desktop to WHS, there is an Additional Drivers button on the Sharing tab of the printer properties:

“WHS is based on Windows Server 2003 so it doesn’t intrinsically know anything about Windows Vista or Windows 7. It does know about 64-bit Windows XP, though. By default the x64 checkbox is unchecked and the driver isn’t installed. When you check the box, you’re prompted to enter the DVD containing the driver. Unfortunately, WHS is 32-bit only so inserting the WHS DVD doesn’t help. I found a copy of Windows Server 2003 64-bit on an old MSDN DVD and used that to provide a copy of the 64-bit driver. This gives me a ‘Yes’ in the Additional Drivers dialog and now I can connect to the printer from Windows 7. When I do, Windows prompts me to elevate permissions so that the driver can be installed and all is well.”

The great add-in Advanced Admin Console (AAC) breaks when Internet Explorer 8 (ie8) is installed on Windows Home Server, and as of March 2009 ie8 is classed as a Critical Update and is automatically installed onto WHS.

So how do we correct this problem?

First of all AAC will crash when you click on an administrative item in the Advanced Admin Console, so the best way of fixing this is to not install ie8, but if it is already installed then you need to remote desktop into your Windows Home Server and from Start – Control Panel – Add or Remove Programs, scroll to the bottom and remove "Windows Internet Explorer 8".

During this process it may complain about another ie8 update which will be uninstalled during the process. Just let it continue and restart the server when prompted.

Once this procedure is complete you will need to stop Windows Update from installing it again in the future, this is accomplished by going to Start – All Programs – Windows Update. Your Home Server may want you to install an update to continue, so just let it continue. On the right hand side click "Custom" and let it find the ie8 update again but this time unselect the install checkbox, expand the title by clicking the “+” box and select "Don’t show this update again".

Voila – Problem solved – Windows Update will no longer find or install Internet Explorer 8.
