This new edition from Diskeeper looks pretty good, I have to be honest I have never been a big fan of Diskeeper, I have always felt O&O Defrag has always had something more to offer.

The initial install is very standard apart from the fact you have to install the initial software from the WHS console and then do a second install for the WHS console integration. In previous editions this has been done through the use of Remote Desktop Connection, where you had to install the program direct to the server and then install the WHS console addin. So I have to say this new way of installing is a welcome addition for many, which should make this program more easy to use.

There is an install guide here.

Once the program was installed, my initial impression was this looks very cramped. I can’t help thinking that Diskeeper have taken their normal desktop program and just blatantly forgot that the WHS console is a lot smaller and cannot be maximised, essentially shoe horning the program onto WHS.

From the initial Diskeeper screen there are many summary section to which you can either scroll down to or use the Goto drop down box at the top of the summary section, to be fair to diskeeper although the initial screen is not much to look at it does have all the relevant information you are looking for just at a glance.

There isn’t really any setting up you have to do for this software, it just gets on with the job at hand, automatically defragging each drive as the server is idle and for this reason it gets a big thumbs up from me. This gives the average user who doesn’t want to have to configure software after install, the ability to once the software is installed, you can just walk away.

By default automatic defragmentation is set for all the time, this for me was something I wanted to change and to do this you can just right click on any drive and select “automatic defragmentation… “ now you can either configure the one drive or all drives at once, I always want my drive the be defragged during the night but others may want during the day while they are at work. The good thing is that you can configure on a day to day basis.

InteliWrite pre-empts fragmentation and deals with it there then, an excellent feature that is going to keep performance at a maximum at all times and as always prevention is better than the cure.

If you go in to the configuration settings there are many things that can be changed, such as file exclusions, event logging, power management, volume shadow copy settings, proxy settings and new volume protection.

You really do get a lot for your money with this edition and I should think so when the software weighs in at $59.95. Now this for me has always been my gripe with defragmentation software, the price of it is always more than it should be, after all this isn’t software that will give you hours of entertainment or pleasure, it basically sits there, doing what looks like nothing.

I will have to report back later on the exact performance, but on first looks it is doing exactly what it says on the tin.

Overall an easy to install piece of software which is easy to configure, but the price for me is what lets it down, and maybe will put off some or even many off buying.

Its nearly hear. Microsoft has officially announced that next Tuesday on the 24th of November Power Pack 3 will be available via Windows Update.

The release will be available in Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish and users must have Windows Home Server with Power Pack 2 already installed on their home server to receive the update.

Power Pack 3 (PP3) improves the Windows Home Server experience with both Windows 7 and Windows Media Center by providing backup and restore of computers running Windows 7, Windows 7 Libraries integration, enhancements for Windows Media Center, and better support for netbook computers.

If you missed our previous post on what’s new in PP3, here’s a refresh for you:

Windows 7 Libraries integration
When you install the Windows Home Server Connector and log on a computer running Windows 7, you can access the Windows Home Server shared folders from the Windows 7 libraries.

Windows 7 Action Center backup warning suppression
After you install the Windows Home Server Connector to enable the home server backup for your computer running Windows 7, you can suppress the Action Center warning reminding you that Windows Backup has not been set up.

Windows 7 power settings
You can configure your computer running Windows 7 to wake up at a scheduled backup time and then go back to sleep after the backup finishes.

Console support for Windows 7
Windows 7 is properly displayed as the operating system shown in the Computers & Backup tab.

Windows Search
Windows Search 4 is included to improve query search times, indexing times, and reliability. Extended Remote Discovery increases the efficiency of searching across all your libraries running Windows Search 4. Files encrypted with EFS are now supported.

TV archive
Windows Home Server can automatically archive recorded TV by moving your recordings from a Windows Media Center computer to your home server in the format of your choice. This enables playback in the correct format for your home computers and/or portable devices.

Console view
You can view information about your home server’s storage space, hard drives, backup status, and more from Windows Media Center.

Can’t wait till Tuesday, can you?

Diskeeper 2010 HomeServer edition has been updated to include IntelliWrite which prevents the majority of fragmentation before it even happens and for any fragmentation that does occur, Diskeeper 2010 utilizes a powerful defragmentation engine to rapidly handle any remaining fragmentation with zero impact on system resources.

Diskeeper 2010 dramatically improves system performance from faster file reads and writes. By curtailing the excessive I/Os associated with fragmentation, wear and tear on the drive is greatly reduced, resulting in extended hardware life. Behind the scenes, free space is consolidated, further reducing the chances of future fragmentation, and the location of the most commonly used files is optimized for faster access. All of this occurs with zero impact on system resources.

Other features include:

NEW! IntelliWrite fragmentation prevention technology

Terabyte Volume Engine (TVE)

Breakthrough Technology! InvisiTasking

Real-time defragmentation

Uncompromising file and free space defragmentation

"Defragmentation Intelligence" enhancements

Automatic online directory consolidation

Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) Compatibility mode

Boot-Time Mode

Home Network support

Diskeeper 2010 HomeServer is available for $59.95 whilst owners of Diskeeper 2009 HomeServer can upgrade for $35.97 saving $23.98.

More info plus a 30 day trial download is available from here.

To win you need to say how a home server would bring peace of mind to YOUR life, or why you really want one, but as a haiku.

What’s a haiku, I hear you cry?

A haiku is a three line, one stanza, traditional Japanese poem lacking rhyme and metaphor; the first line must have 5 syllables, the second line 7, and the third line 5.

So, what you waiting for, head over to Win a Home Server.com for a chance of winning some booty.

WebStorage Service
The Asus TS Mini also offers users a year of free 500GB Web storage space allowing you to boost your storage or synchronize backups online for improved data security. Additionally, you can save large peer-to-peer files on the Web, and share data with user accounts worldwide.

Media Streaming
The TS mini makes it easy for you to stream photos, music, video and other digital content to various devices including TVs, computers, Media PCs, and gaming consoles—for all-around content access as well as allowing you to stream music and multimedia content through the online connection.

Xtor Manager
With the ASUS Xtor Manager, you can directly backup, synchronize and manage your files and folders between external USB and eSATA storage devices and TS mini.

ASWM Management
ASWM, real-time system health monitoring tool, helps users to monitor online and system status of TS mini, including fans, temperature, disks, drives, network, memory and CPU. Once errors occur, the system will instantly send error report to pre-configured email.

ASUS Unveils TS Mini Server for Today’s Small Office/Home Office

– Compact, energy efficient and pre-installed with Windows® Home Server, the TS Mini serves the need to access and share content on-demand –

Fremont, California (November 18, 2009) – ASUS, a worldwide leader in personal computers, today introduces the TS mini small office/home office (SOHO) server. The TS mini targets modern home and small office users that frequently exchange data from multiple computers and require access from various locations. The TS mini secures documents, multimedia, and other digital content into a sleek repository. It further safeguards data on multiple computers across the home or office with automatic backups and cloud storage. TS mini allows centralized file access with local networks, attached storage devices and remotely over the internet. Equipped with an Intel® Atom™ processor, the TS mini delivers quiet, energy efficient, always-on access. Operating on the Microsoft® Windows™ Home Server Platform, it simplifies management of digital content. The TS Mini is available now for pre-order at Amazon.com and NewEgg.com starting at $349.99 USD.

“Consumer demand for rich content that can be accessed anytime, anywhere, on any device is fueling innovation in networking and storage of media and data in the home,” said Seth Bobroff, general manager, Data Center Group – Storage, Intel Corporation. “The Intel® Atom™ processor in the TS mini enables ASUS to deliver the ability to stream media, share files and protect data while remotely accessing it, all in a sleek and energy-efficient 2-bay design.”

“We are pleased to welcome ASUS, one of the industry’s leading PC manufacturers, to the Windows Home Server family,” said Leslie McGuire, Microsoft Director of Windows Server Marketing. “Customers tell us they want an easy and inexpensive way to store, manage and protect their digital content. ASUS helps them achieve all of that with their TS Mini Server, which includes a robust option for adding data capacity through external Web storage.”

Easy Backup and Restoration of Home Computers

The TS mini can automatically back up data from up to 10 computers daily. With six USB and two eSATA ports, the TS mini lets users directly back up, synchronize, and manage their files across various USB and eSATA devices and the internal hard disk drive. In a recovery scenario, users can bring individual computers or the entire office back online by loading the latest recovery information saved on the TS mini.

Convenient Content Sharing and Easy Remote Access

The TS mini makes it easy for users to stream photos, music, video and other digital content to various devices including TVs, computers, Media PCs, and gaming consoles—for all-around content access. With the Remote Access feature, users outside the local network can also leverage their personal Windows Live™ account to access the TS mini and its content. Additionally, they can stream music and multimedia content through the online connection.

Large Data Capacity with Exclusive Web Storage

The latest mini-itx main board from Intel is the D510M0 which is equipped with the Intel Atom Dual Core D510 processor (2x 1.66GHz and 2x 512K cache) and the Intel NM10 Express Chipset, providing more than enough power for a Windows Home Server home build.

The latest mini-itx main board from Intel is the D510M0 which is equipped with the Intel Atom Dual Core D510 processor (2x 1.66GHz and 2x 512K cache) and the Intel NM10 Express Chipset, providing more than enough power for a Windows Home Server home build.

As well as the 2x hyper threaded 1.66GHz CPUs (4x CPUs in Task manger) the north bridge controller is on the SAME silicon as the CPUs, improving overall performance.

An early tester of the D510M0 board is Tranquil PC who had this to say:

(We) will be using this new board in numerous new PCs and Servers, including the new MiDASS series of Home Servers. There is talk, that the board will also be made available on it’s own too.

Due to be shipped in early January 2010 by Tranquil PC the TDP is only 13W (that’s the CPU and the North Bridge) and would suggest that, with suitable air flow, the D510 can be passively cooled by the fitting of a heat sink, making a quiet Home Server solution.

More details are available from here.

Australia’s APCMag.com is highlighting the new Home Server design by Intel which utilizes the Atom CPU.

The bespoke platform is specifically designed for the Windows Home Server platform and is being developed in conjunction with Gigabyte, and is known as the "Little Butte".

As well as Gigabit Ethernet and the single memory slot there is capacity for 4 x internal SATA hard drives as well as 2 x eSata ports and 4 x USB 2.0 for further expansion.

A front panel connector for a visual control panel and/or status indicators is also provided as well as an embedded switch on the rear panel which boots the server into a WinPE environment for recovery from a system crash.

More details are available from APC Magazine Online.

On Tuesday (10th Nov 09) Windows Home Server users were receiving the following error in their Home Network Health tab within the Console:

Windows Home Server was unable to update Windows Live Custom Domains with your current IP address. Your web site may not be available on the Internet.

This was due to a problem with the Windows Live Custom Domain service, a spokesperson for Microsoft had this to say:

Today the Live DNS service had a hiccup that prevented updates for records on the .homeserver.com domain name. Thus if your WAN IP address changed on your router, the home server was unable to update this record, and remote access was not available. This may have been accompanied with an alert from the home server. If your WAN address did not change during the last 24 hours, remote access was unaffected.

The issue is now resolved and the Live DNS service is now 100% functional again.

Thanks to the German Home Server Blog for the update.

.NET developer Travis Illig is stating that a in-place upgrade for PerfectDisk doesn’t work for Windows Home Server:

PerfectDisk has a feature to "check for updates" from within the Windows Home Server console. It’s OK to use the "check for updates" feature to see if there’s an update, but do not install the update from there.

First, trying that will fail because the Windows Home Server console is open (Catch-22, eh?). Second, if you try to do the update from Windows Home Server via Terminal Services, it doesn’t quite do what you expect. I think the engine gets updated, but the console add-in doesn’t or something. Stuff gets messed up. Just don’t do it.

Travis shows us the proper sequence of events to install an update to PerfectDisk for WHS for a problem free upgrade.

Version 3.1 contains some bug fixes and adds a new feature: DLC-Container format support. Links encrypted in DLC-Files can be added to the Download-Pool.

Developer Christof Rakowski also tells us that a Client-Version, which will feed links to the Windows Home Server, will be out soon – Great news!

For example you can search a web site (like mswhs.com) directly from the Windows 7 search box, and to make that possible we have made a search connector for MSWHS.com which also adds MSWHS to your favorite locations in Win7.

Just download and double click on the .osdx file to enable searching of MSWHS.com directly within Windows 7 Windows Explorer.

It has only been a few weeks since HP upgraded its MediaSmart home server range; we reviewed the excellent top of the range MediaSmart EX495, and found it to be a very capable and impressive little server. So what have HP got in store for us with the new StorageWorks x510 Data Vault range?

What’s different?

Well the principal difference from the EX49x server range is that the new servers are intended as small business servers rather than for home use. As such, they are essentially the same physical hardware albeit with different options on disk storage.

With the two consumer MediaSmart servers, the EX490 and the EX495 you get a single 1tb or 1.5tb hard disk respectively, but the x510 comes in three variants: a 1tb, 2tb and a 3tb (although they are all called the x510!) with the larger pair reaching their capacities using a pair of hard disks.

A pair of hard disks on the bigger two servers is a welcome addition as it allows businesses to set up folder duplication out of the box, although having said that, adding a second (or third or even forth) hard disk to the MediaSmart/StorageWorks family is so easy that it could be done by small children; well perhaps not, but the screw-less caddies do make adding hard disks very easy indeed.

A new addition for the StorageWorks x510 range is that HP are promising Amazon S3 backup storage integration in November 09, which could offer the potential of hassle-free off site backups for any business who want to have the extra data security this service can provide. No details of this service were available at the time of writing, but I am sure we will bring you news of how it operates and whether it will also be available to MediaSmart owners as soon as we know.

Hands on

The x510 ships in a rather business-like plain brown box, unlike the colorful and shiny one that the MediaSmart server pitched up wearing. Packed safely inside is the server itself, a power and Ethernet cable, three recovery disks (Software installation, PC Restore and Server Recovery) and a setup poster.

Unpacking the server reveals the first major difference; look it says HP Data Vault instead of HP MediaSmart Server on the front! But other than having a pair of hard disks already installed, there seems to be no obvious differences between this and the MediaSmart EX495 server. Also present up front is a single USB 2.0 port ready for connecting USB backup hard disks without having to grope around the back of the server.

Behind the mesh front door, and with the caddies removed we can see a pair of 80cm fans to keep the heat down and four sets of SATA and power connectors ready for the hard disks.

Finally around the back we find the remaining 3 x USB 2.0 connections, an eSATA, the Gigabit Ethernet port and the power socket and switch.

In use

When active, the server gave a very respectable power consumption of around 45w which dropped to around 30w when it was idle. The dual core Intel E5200 processor and 2gb of RAM make short work of the regular server functions, and totally rip through the HP media conversion and streaming extras.

In addition to Microsoft Windows Home Server, the StorageWorks x510 has all the extra media streaming and conversion software that the MediaSmart servers have, so if you are unfamiliar with how cool HP’s extra software is, then check out our previous EX495 review.

Even though HP have used the same basic software for the x510, their attention to detail has extended to ensuring that any reference to ‘MediaSmart’ has been replaced with ‘Data Vault’.

Verdict

This has ended up being a pretty short review simply because everything that could be said about this server has already been said in our previous review of the EX495.

I am not really sure why HP have renamed the MediaSmart server in order to sell it to businesses; but if this means that HP are able to push more servers out though their business distribution and support channels, then great, if more of these fantastic servers are available to users. And if that means that more customers outside the US can get hold of one, then that is even better news to the consumers in countries who aren’t able to buy a MediaSmart server yet.

Even though this is really a home server wearing a business suit, for any small business or regional office of a large company, the combination of Windows Home Server and the HP x510 are a cracking solution to their storage and backup needs, which will provide immediate security that will grow easily with their storage needs. The protection of of the data stored on this server can only be strengthened when the Amazon S3 integration ships later in the year.

This is still a great server package whatever name HP call it.

TFS is a team collaboration server that provides work item tracking, source control, reporting, process guidance and more. Version 2010 Beta2 can be installed on WHS by using a remote desktop connection and website “Gaffer-Tape Engineering” takes us through the steps and also explains how to export the Home Server certificate which is also required.

PC Pro has given the HP MediaSmart Server EX490 a recommended badge, giving it 5 out of 6 for it’s overall rating :

So while the MediaSmart EX490 gets a definite thumbs up, we suggest you take stock of your needs – and the devices on your home network – before taking the plunge. For basic home server duties a cheaper, simpler option, such as the Tranquil T2, may work just as well. But if the sophistications of the EX490 fit your home and your budget then go for it: it’s a capable and excellently designed little server.
