It still strikes me as absurd that Dell does not make a WHS. However I have found that my best WHS incarnations are made from using old Dell Poweredge servers.

you write:
Khaing: Quonting MicrosoftJunkie:”The way remote desktop for administration works in terminal services is that you are allowed: 1 console session for admin purposes and 2 rd sessions for users. The only way to increase this number is to install terminal server and add some cals to the server. Once you install terminal server and switch to remote desktop for apps instead of administration, you will be given a grace period, something like 90 or 180 days, before having to setup the licensing. Hoever, this is only meant for giving you time to set this up, it isn’t intended soley as a free grace period.”
But where to get this or buy these cals for WHS?
need 3 more thx

Damn. This plugin is like the perfect demostration of the Heisenberg Principle which states that the act of measuring a quantity actually alters it and the measurement is always false. Just running this plugin to graph CPU utilization results in its 80% utilization.

With the 640GB priced at $324, and adding in $100 for OEM WHS, the price starts to get up there. And with the LX195 currently $199 at the Egg it would be hard to sell it as a WHS.

The Zino reminds me of my old Cube enclosure. A digital or optical out would have been cool. I assume the VGA is supplied for LCDs instead of a cleaner DVI output. The eSATA is a nice touch but I bet your external drive is the same size as the Zino!

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/insp300/en/index.htm

I will say however, being a true Dell Guy, that I would love to buy one of these as a HTPC Chistmas gift! It makes as an alternative to the Studio Hybrid for half the price. For $259 with Win7, WMC and HDMI you cannot lose!

Review? This told me nothing about the WHS OS. The "reviewer" eluded to running in a RAID configuration to protect data, apparently no idea about what WHS OS is all about. Then, if you don't like it you can run Linux. Who buys a WHS server to run Linux. Note to reviewer, check your arse, it's on fire

Yup Mesh is good. Have you looked at SkyDrive from MS too? Someone wrote an app called SkyDrive explorer that allows cool access to the online 25Gb - another storage (free) option but there are file size limits and possible/probably security issues as always with placing things in the cloud.

I hear ya - it is just an opinion I guess. I'm thinking mostly about home videos and pictures of my kids, scanned paperwork and tax receipts which are disposed of after scanning, etc. Things that I do not want to store electronically if they cannot be reasonably safeguarded from loss. I cannot see us picking up a hard drive daily or multiple times a week and hauling it around as a regular thing - I barely remember to wear pants every day.

On a side note, I use Windows Live Sync and love it. Not for everyone though. Live Mesh has its uses too. They aren't good fixes for everyone though.

I've been using MJ for a couple months now and never thought about installing the jack onto my WHS until last week. Yeah the jack software would not install rite and I was beginning to think that WHS + MagicJack was not meant to be. This tutorial helped me and it looks like it is working. Thanks

xYike, see your point, I guess it depends on how you are using your home server. For most home use then periodic backups to an external drive stored offsite or in a fireproof safe is fine - the same for say a small business that uses a Home Server for backing up workstations. If you are looking at a HOME server in a BUSINESS environment with critical data and the like a) you do not have an entirely suitable product b) you should be looking at a proper disk.tape backup solution with offsite and maybe online backup solutions (for periodic/disaster recovery)

Remember this is a home server not a Windows 200x server which has adequate backup solutions available and more scalable solutions.

Local HD backups and carrying the drive off-site? I feel that (1) is unrealistic as an off-site strategy and (2) doesn't provide the backup granularity that most people want.

This reminds me of making people have 24-character complex passwords with 30-day expiration dates. (in other words, how long is this going to be effective - not very long)

I would recommend an external drive and making backups of the server periodically and taking the drive offsite again.

At least that way you get your data back in a timely manner. Imagine trying to download anything from an online backup in any short period of time.

I use a scheduled task that runs daily to an external HDD that is not added to WHS to backup certain shares. This does provide some measure of protection against deletions
from the normal shares.
Batch file follows -

SET overall=%time%
REM Copy the WHS “shares” folder to external drive O:
echo _________________________________________ >> O:\BackupLog.txt
echo %date% - %time% >> O:\BackupLog.txt
echo Users Share >> O:\BackupLog.txt
XCopy D:\shares\users O:\Shares\users /D /E /V /C /I /G /H /R /K /X /Y >> O:\BackupLog.txt
echo Backup >> O:\BackupLog.txt

If you make up a spare WHS you can use your spare computer to load different OSes for testing or whatever, and simply restore to whatever you need. I also have an additional spare WHS that I use on service calls so that I can backup clients' servers or computers prior to making changes. (This Service Call WHS has backups of servers and computers already so that the "new" backups are only of different files and folders making it very fast.)

Update your Nvidea display drivers with the latest for your chipset from the Nvidea site.

I know it's counterintuitive but this should fix the remote desktop issue with XP machines from dell.

I my case dell optiplex 755

I agree that the automatic backup features of WHS are one of the main reasons to have a home server. Apart from failed disks, I frequently find that I need to revert files on my PC back to a prior version. For example, sometimes a project will accidentally get deleted. Or a file will get overwritten with edits that you later decide you don't want. Or you might find a program/driver that gets installed and causes problems to the system. In all these cases it is nice to be able to either pull individual files or even a full back-up from some time in the past.

However, this also points out a shortcoming in a feature of WHS: Duplication of shared folders. With WHS, you can have a centralized repository of photos, documents, videos, etc. WHS has a nice feature where shared folders are duplicated. The only problem is it is a duplication of the current state without backups of prior states. That's helpful if a disk fails (much like RAID), but it isn't useful if I accidentally clobber a file on the WHS.

For example, let's say someone decides to go through and crop all my photos in the shared folders. Or I mess up something with tagging or other edits. Or I overwrite a critical document... in all cases, unless I am able to catch something before the DE migration process kicks in, I now have two copies of my mistake with no recovery.

I hope that Microsoft is thinking about this scenario in future iterations of WHS. Or perhaps there is a solution today with versioning? I know I can do backups of shared folders, but that is a manual process. So anyone have a suggestion on this scenario?

i dont believe the issue is with rebooting... it with the unexpected. if you tell windows to reboot periodically it will save or finish its work (load balancing) then properly reboot by shutting off all services and turning things back over to the APM.

data errors will not hapen by a magicaly random reboots. these are "events" that cause the machine to crash or just loose power randomly that cause issues with data loss. it is perfectly safe to tell windows vista with bitlocker to reboot, just dont force it.

scheduled and periodic reboots are part of microsofts best server practices.

Hello. I just completed my installation of Windows Home Server in a Hyper V VM on 2008 R2. I did it this way so I can still have the ability to use my server for other OS's as WHS will not max out the server.

Here is my post on it.

I was wondering if Hyper-V had the same hardware monitoring as WHS did. (or really, as good of a notification scheme, I guess I could settle for e-mail notifications but a bubble from the system tray would be better for me).

Hmm... I followed the instructions on creating the WHS user, but when I restarted the server (Acer Easystore) and tried to log in as that user, I am still seeing the "To log on to this remote computer, you must be granted the Allow log on through Terminal Services right. By default, members of the Remote Desktop Users group or another group that has this right, or if the Remote Desktop User group does not have this right, you must be granted this right manually". I actually see a number of users that I have created using the console under the Remote Desktop Users group, but I can't Remote Desktop to my server with any other account other than "administrator". What to do now?

Hello,
I have also been having some issues with WHS. I have setup port forwaring via my DLink DIR-615 router. I can access internally via network / console or remote desktop but in the console it states that my router cannot verify accepting remote access or web site connections. I've been surfing for a week now to try and figure this out. I have a static IP address assigned to my WHS only with all my other machines obtaining automatically. I have spoken with my ISP and these ports are not blocked. I have shut down the firewall on WHS, I've even tried DMZ through my router and it still will not succesfully configure within the console. I'm now thinking it is my router but wanted some feedback to see if anyone else had any comments before i ditch the DLink.

To put it simply, I'd use the HP MediaSmart EX490 Server as the hub. The hub to what you might ask...The hub to my life. Obviously I'd use the EX490 to back up my 3 windows machines (2 XP desktops & 1 Vista laptop) and the single Mac laptop. But from there the EX490 would be the single location where all our media viewing would happen. A single location for my families pictures and home videos and not just the family that live in the house, we'd be able to share this media with the grandparents - they'll love it. Then of course we'd be able to watch all the online videos we purchase right on our TV streaming from the EX490. The HP MediaSmart EX490 Server would be our one location to store what amounts to my families entertainment and memories!
Oh, I would then have the EX490 backed up online via KeepVault...We'd never lose another family photo/video again!

The correct way to update PD/WHS to a new build is as follows:

- When connected to your WHS via Console and notified that a PD update is available, choose to install
- When notified that the Console is open and to Retry, Ignore, Cancel, choose Ignore
- When prompted to restart your Windows Home Server, reboot
- Upon reboot, PD is updated

I have been looking forward to this new device for quite a while. I was planning to do the 485, but with the discovery that the esata port not supporting multiple drives, this put me back to looking at the 47X. I will need the extra room, but am not ready to modify the 47X to the processor speed that I would like. This 490 looks perfect, but I haven't purchased yet as the economy has tanked and 6mo old twins have tightened up our belts for us.

The backup features on this look just amazing, and as someone else mentioned, having the baby Einstein movies to be streamed to my PS3 would make life just that more simple. And setting up the remote access to photos would be the feature the rest of the family would like the best. There are so many great features, I seem to find more each time I look at another forum.
