I just ran into an issue installing WHS on an Intel DG33FB motherboard. The new chipset boards come with AHCI for SATA enabled by default, and WHS doesn’t have the drivers built in. Be sure to either change the SATA settings to IDE, or download your hardware vendors AHCI F6 drivers in order to save hours of mind numbing frustration.
With that little “issue” aside I now have a wonderful Quad-Core WHS with 4GB of memory and 2TB of drive space running Microsoft Virtual Server and a sundry of other tidbits on my network!

Hi James Senecal,
Thanks for the tip on downloading the AHCI drivers. That’s a lot of memory! Glad you now have a great running home server.

I am setting up windows home server and have added user accounts with passwords. As a test, I have given several accounts full access to all the user accounts and HP pre-installed shared folders (i.e., music, video, etc.). I cannot access either the shared folders or personal folders (user accounts). I get an access denied error. Does anyone know why this might be happening and how to resolve it? I would like to begin my data migration to the server.

While pst files are supposedly not “supported” on a WHS LAN, MS also suggests that pst files may be backed up and restored to/from WHS. When I attempted to restore a pst file from a backup performed some weeks earlier, however, I only get the content of the current pst file, not the pst file that was backed up. The process itself (selecting the backup, etc.) seemed to go flawlessly.
What am I doing wrong?

I have been having problems recovering Home server backups on my small network. The problem appears when I try to access the backup from the client system.. WHS console is started and a dialog asks for the password. I insert the password and receive an error stating the password is incorrect. I have pasted the correct password into the program with the same results. I get this response on both of my client systems. I have reinstalled the console many times. Same results.
Sure wish someone would say why this happens and that they would rectify the problem. I need the backups and they are unavailable.

Is it possible to install a program on Windows Home Server and be able to use is from any of the attached PC’s?
Or can a program installed on one PC be used from another PC?
What I would like to do is install a program on WHS to allow the users to try the program. If they like it, then I will install it on their machines. I’m hoping I can have them try an upgrade version of a program before actually upgrading their machine. Obviously I’m not looking to violate and licensing issues.

Is it possible to tweak the original source (HTML) of the WHS home page?
September 23, 2009 at 10:30 pm
@Bill, yes. I would suggest one super easy way to do custom websites is to install Whiist. It lets you easily add custom links and images to your start page. Using Whiist you can also host your own websites.

Hi,
I am trying to install Windows Home Server on an old Dell SX270 (Pentium 4 2.8GHZ, 768MB RAM and 40GB 2.5” IDE HDD) with the intent to add USB drives as the main storage. The problem is that it won’t install unless the primary Hard Drive has a capacity of at least 65GB.
I really don’t want to spend the money for a higher capacity obsolete IDE drive that costs almost as much as my old rig.
Any way to bypass the 65GB requirements of WHS and still use my 40GB drive?
Any suggestions? or should I bit the bullet and spend the $60 on the IDE drive.
