WHS Presentation/Demonstration in BC, Canada
If you live in or near BC in Canada then VANTUG (Vancouver Technology User Group) will be securing a visit from Kevin Beares, the Windows Home Server Community Manager in Redmond on February 4th. The Windows Home Server (WHS) Technology and Features Presentation/Demonstration starts at 6PM and Kevin (WHS Community Lead) will discuss and/or demonstrate the following:
- Microsoft’s goals for the digital home and where WHS fits into achieving those goals
- The technology behind WHS
- The features of the product
- Available pre-packaged hardware and hardware requirements if you want to “roll your own”
- Third party extensions to WHS
- Power Pack 1 announced at CES 2008
- Beyond WHS V1
There will also be some great draw prizes including 40 copies of WHS (wow!) webcams and wireless mice.

I’m particularly interested in Microsoft’s goals for the digital home and where WHS fits into achieving those goals. Hope you will blog abit about the presentation/demonstration.
Microsoft only wants to broaden it’s monopoly folks. Why do you think Vista DRM was all about? Ask yourself why did Vista force HDCP that only benefits MPAA?

and as for WHS, it’s more than obvious, the NAS market is growing by leaps and bounds, thus this presents an opportunity for Microsoft to extend, embrace, and then extinguish the competition!!!
Ask yourself, who really wants to save all their personal data, such as family photos and videos, including backup all written in a proprietary data format which WHS only allows!!!
When will WHS if ever provide a resolution regarding KB 946676 Data Corruption?

It’s ironic, Microsoft doesn’t mind selling WHS, despite it has a fatal flaw, such as the data corruption issue, and then actually downplays this rather than to fix it, while promoting the “WOW” experience…
Money, Money and Money is $M priority!
Is it any wonder why more consumers are switching to open source code solutions, that offer real support, real products that do what customers need which are made available for free…
If we didn’t have almost every PC pre-loaded with windowware, the PC would be hundreds of dollars cheaper, and everyone would sell more PC boosting the economy for everyone else to support, rather than just insuring only Microsoft holds on, to it’s monopoly.
Consider how WHS offers only a bare-bones media sharing and streaming capabilities experience… NO 1080p and obviously no 802.11.n wireless connectivity included as well…
However, Belkin offers high definition streaming on their NAS products… need I say more?
Except no protection for the WHS OS drive failure and no print server included by WHS too!
And for those who install WHS themselves, WHS formats the System drive, even if it doesn’t need it, with the full format, taking forever (actually times vary). Speaking of which, WHS is way slower than XP to install.
Compare this with FREE Linux, which boots from DVD or USB HDD and your up in running in less than a few seconds or minutes (depending on PC hardware) with all programs and support! It’s also way more secure.
