WHS Alternative for the 1 PC Household
If you only have one PC in your household then Windows Home Server may not be the best solution for you (unless you like your storage centralized).
Personal Computer World Magazine online has an article on an alternative to WHS, the Netgear ReadyNAS, where hard drive expansion is looked at as well as the extras which are available for the unit including a Firefly iTunes server and a Bittorrent download manager. The article finally looks at email solutions which work with the unit.

Not sure ReadyNAS can be a real competitor, at least not now and not for people with 1 PC. Just checking its price for “driveless” box ~$950 in NetGear’s online shop… Now check Amazon (as an example) for HP WHS solution – it is around $500 with 500GB included.
Not mentioning that you get a PC which you can use for other things, like I’m running MS Virtual Server on it for example. Can I do this on NetGear’s more expensive solution? Doubt so.
I do agree with you but you do have to consider the power consumption as well.
