Add-In: WHS Quicken 1.0.6.6
We mentioned last week that "The Office Maven" was completing an add-in which allows you to use the Intuit Quicken software from your Windows Home Server.
Entitled "WHS Quicken", the add-in is now available and works well at helping you keep track of your personal finances.
You need to install a copy of Intuit Quicken directly onto your WHS, after which WHS Quicken will allow you to access that installed copy of Quicken using a customized remote desktop connection. So you can access that data from both the desktop of any client computer that is attached to your home network or from anywhere else using a web browser and a PC/Laptop with internet access.
A WHS Quicken Connector app is also available, a small application that can be installed on any client machine that is used to connect to WHS Quicken and provides server-to-client and client-to-server interactions for both local AND Internet-based WHS Quicken connections. This allows you to transfer files from the server to the client, transfer files from the client to the server, quickly lock the connection to the server and change settings etc.
WHS Quicken is a full-fledged version 1.x commercial release and is available in a 21-day trial mode allowing you to try it out, without any restrictions or limitations for free. After that a single-server license for WHS Quicken sells for only $24.99 USD.
Localized in English, German, and French languages, you can download a copy of WHS Quicken using the Add-In Central add-in. Once Add-In Central is installed just open it up, select WHS Quicken from the list of available add-ins, and click on the Download button.

Currently I have Quicken on the WHS and just do an RDP connection to the server to run it. How is this better?

There are a quite a few answers to that one…
First off, WHS Quicken allows you to easily give other users of your home network (and not just the network Administrator) access to Quicken. For example, in our household, my wife is the one who manages the checkbook. With WHS Quicken, my wife can access Quicken from any computer/laptop in our house without ever needing to log on to the home server as the Administrator (which, as you could probably imagine, would be a serious security risk in most cases ).
Many households also have children/teens with their own checking/savings accounts. WHS Quicken allows you to set up easy access to Quicken for other family members. I don’t know about you, but I would like my children to learn to control their own personal finances early on in life. With WHS Quicken, I can set up a separate Quicken account for each child in the family, and they can access it from any computer/laptop on the home network. WHS Quicken provides them with a DEDICATED Quicken session where I don’t have to worry about them messing up other things on the server (as they could/would if I simply provided them with a simple remote desktop connection to the server’s Administrator desktop).
Lastly, and perhaps best of all, WHS Quicken allows web access to Quicken from anywhere in the world using only a web browser. For example, with WHS Quicken, my wife can now update our checkbook, check our account balances, pay bills, etc., etc. from work, while we are on vacation, etc., etc. That feature alone is worth its weight in gold in my book (and my wife absolutely LOVES it!).
WHS Quicken allows all of that (plus a whole lot more) to be done quickly and easily by the “average” home server user. Sure, if you’re a home server power user, then you may be able to manually set up your home server to do a lot of that stuff all by yourself, but WHS Quicken does it all for you with ease and style, without you ever having to mess around with complicated server settings that would make most home network user’s head spin.

That was probably my fault as I’ve just released a Quicken AND a QuickBooks add-in at the same time. Therefore, I probably just mixed up the two names when typing the descriptions, etc.

Also, just so everyone knows the WHS Quicken and WHS QuickBooks add-ins were actually completed many, many months ago (and are based off a lot of the time-proven source code from my popular WHS Outlook add-in). I’ve just been so busy working on the new Add-In Central add-in (along with Alexander Kent) that I haven’t had a chance to post/release them until just now. I have some more cool add-ins up my sleeve as well (assuming that I can find the time to clean them up and release them that is ).
