Backup SBS to WHS
Microsoft employee "The IO Guy" has a great post on an unsupported way to back up Small Business Server (SBS) to Windows Home Server.
He installed the WHS connector software onto SBS 2008, but as Home Server is not a solution to backup things like Exchange, Active Directory and SQL databases he used the built in SBS Backup utility to backup the server to disk, and then used Home Server to backup that backup. An ideal way to backup Small Business Server to Windows Home Server.

I am a Microsoft Small Business Specialist, so this is very interesting! This relates to a question I’ve had for a very long time: I’ve wanted to use a HomeServer in a small office to provide remote access to a Terminal Server, BUT that would require the HomeServer connector software be installed on the Terminal Server…..before this post, I didn’t think that was possible, but since this post, I’m realizing it may be!
Hello. I run SBS currently being backed up to WHS and have the same problem. However, when you say “he used the built in SBS Backup utility to backup the server to disk, and then used Home Server to backup that backup”, I’m not certain of what you mean. How did he get the contents of the disk backup to WHS. Is the disk backup running Windows?

He probably installed the Windows Home Server connector software on his SBS Server. You can then configure the SBS Server in the Windows Home Server console in the backup section to customize what is backed up – you can exclude hard drives and folders – so he probably excluded everything but the SBS Backup file.
Not a bad idea. I may have to do that 🙂
