MediaSmart and Twonky Media – Still High CPU Issues
Some HP MediaSmart Server owners are still experiencing high CPU utilization when using Twonky Media even after installing the latest 3.0 Patch 2 software from HP which was supposed to fix the issue.
It seems that Twonky Media provided a fix to HP back in November 2009 in the form of update 5.1.2 of Twonky Media Server. There is always a delay between the time Twonky Media turn updates to HP and the time they deploy them in the actual field. We presumed HP distributed this fix in March as the 3.0 Patch 2 software, but it appears that the 3.0 Patch 2 software only included the Twonky Media Server 5.1.1 software, and not the 5.1.2 version as expected.
Hopefully HP will have version 5.1.2 of the Twonky Media Server available soon to existing MediaSmart Server owners.

Can you just download the 5.1.2 WHS version from http://www.twonkyforum.com/downloads/5.1.2/ or do you have to wait for HP to package it?
@ Brian
you can download it from Twonky, BUT, it will require you to buy a new serial key. Or you can wait for HP to release their modified version with the OEM key.
Sucks I know.
I had to completely disable the Media Server.
When enabled, the whole system slows down to a crawl. Just trying to access the Home Console takes minutes instead of the instant open when disabled.
Also, somehow I can’t stream video nor audio now. Pictures show fine though. And yes, it worked before just fine.
Quite disappointed at that. Hopefully they fix it quick.
Twonkymedia still kills my homeserver. It is dreadful.
This has to be fixed very soon.
i even tried 5.1.2 for WHS (with a separate license) and got exactly the same, 100% CPU usage all the time.
And that makes it the second problem HP should address ASAP!
(The first one being the fact that the server does NOT go to sleep at the time specified.) (If you put it to sleep manually it does wake up though)
Hi all,
there is a fairly simple fix that work for me:
1. Go to the twony wensite and download the latest version of TwonkyMediaServer for WHS (5.1.2)
2. Disable the TwonkyMediaServer vis the WHS console
3. open the downloaded msi install file with winrar
4. RDP to your WHS, open explorer and navigate to c:/twonkymedia
5. rename twoknymedia.exe and twoknymediaserver.exe (fot future use, probably never needed again)
6. copy twoknymedia.exe and twoknymediaserver.exe from the msi-file to your whs c:/twonkymedia
7. go to the console, settings, twony tab and press the rebuild databas button (not shure if its named like that, I have a German version)
8. restart the twonky in the console
9. Tataaaa, your done, WHS fixed!
Remark: as long as you only exchange the two exe files, the licens that comes with the HP WHS does not complain.
Hope this helps some people,
Tom
Thanks for the solution tom.
It works!
It works but partialy only: PC connect successfuly, but my smart tv and my radio (SONY CMT-MX700Ni) shows only message “trial expired, please visit http://…”
sry m8, you fix it appears to work at first, but after some time, license issues (next morning in my case). “trial expired”in wmp
Is there ANYTHING we can do or anyone we can contact at HP to get this moving? I went to HP’s site and it strongly recommends against the above solution because of Hielke’s observation.
C’mon… HP sold this product based, in part, on its wonderful media capabilities. Yea right, at 99% CPU usage?
Does anyone from HP read the WHS forums? Surely they know of this problem.
I just bought an HP490 and it’s constantly locked at 100%. I RDC’d across and its Twonkymedia that’s killing the machine. So basically the server is useless – except as a door stop. I’m going to try the Tech support and if that fails – then they can have the machine back
I experienced the same 100% cpu on a brand new EX490. I reset twonky to default settings, rebuilt the database, and then it behaves decently. Except that it doesn’t work at all 🙁 – cant connect to it from anything. Noot good.
Is it possible to install the new version 6 of twonky manually in the same way? I have a valid licence key for my old NAS version so that’s not a problem if it’s needed.
I called HP
The problem occours when there are video’s with a problem in them… the easyest way to solve the CPU eating problem is to:
– connect to the Home server console
–> Media Smartserver menu
–> media server
–> Configer media server (button)
–> Media sharing folders
Then klic on Videos ==> Remove
–> Maintanance
–> Rebuilt database
sorry for my bad english…. i’m dutch
Thanks (Dank je) Marco
That worked for me.
Since this problem wasn’t fixed in 3.0 patch 2 or 3 does anybody know if HP will fix this in the next patch 4 and when? My server has become a right pain as I have to go in and switch off twonky every time an MS update requires a reboot. 🙁
Hi Ian,
I dont think HP will be fixing this problem now that they have abandoned the MediaSmart range – Sorry!
I guess this is going to be my first and last HP purchase. They should still honour my warranty and fix not just abandon the product…
