The Western Digital 3.0TB Hard Drive

WD Caviar Green Hard Drive

Yesterday Western Digital (WD)announced the availability of their new offerings in the Caviar Green line. The $189 2.5TB model and the 3.0TB priced at $239. Both models are SATA 3 Gb/s, come with 64MB of Cache and being of the Green variety only consume 6 watts during read/write operations and less than 1 watt during standby/sleep. But off course being an advanced format drive this hard drive will be of no use for version 1 WHS users, but ideal for those of you currently testing Vail.

More information is available at WD, whilst hardware review sites AnandTech and LegitReviews give us their reviews.

Would’ve been more useful an article if you’d mentioned that it was a 4K cluster size (“Advanced Format”) drive and thus not compatible with most WHS BYOD-type boxes.

    Just sayin’.

  2. Dale says:

maybe the standard disclaimer about not using an advanced format hard disk with WHS v1 should be published with the story as well?

  3. Hi varum and Dale,
Thanks for the reminder. I was going to publish that along with the news snippet but totally forgot. It’s now corrected – Thanks

There are many of us using 1.5TB & 2TB WD EARS advanced drives in version 1 WHS using the jumpers. I have 2 different WHS v1 servers using several each of these drives working flawlessly. I did have issues with them when they were in my SansDigital 4-bay attached to my EX470, but when installed directly in my EX470 they work fine as long as they are jumpered. In my DIY WHS server they work fine on both the MB SATA ports as well as on my Rosewill SATA card, and again they are jumpered.
I can’t speak for the 3TB, and I understand the need for a disclaimer, but if used as pool drives only and if the jumper is used, the advanced dives work fine for a lot of us.
