RC (Release Candidate) of Vail Imminent
The Windows Home Server Team yesterday posted a tweet on Twitter stating that they had signed off on the final RC (Release Candidate) of Vail, with a link pointing to the Windows Home Server page on the Microsoft Connect beta site.
The link has since been removed and website Winrumors are also predicting that the RC will be available on the Connect site this Thursday.
It looks like we may have the RC of Vail very soon!

Hmm..the bit.ly link is still working 😉
Wonder what everyone is planning in place of drive extender
Check out my plans at welchwerks.com under galleries Norco build. Its my rack system.
They really need to open up more about their plans for adding and managing drives. I would never have purchased the WHS v1 without something like Drive Extender. Certainly I’m not going to buy WHS v2 without something similar.
Ya I feel ya, but my current only option unless someone wants to chime in here is, this
The cost of the raid card to run the 24 drive case I mentioned above acerca 1880xi-24 is 1400 bucks
Hi,
Try this link on for size, its what I am thinking of geting for my Norco setup.

welchwerks,
The other options is to get an 1880i for $579 and then add to that an HP SAS Expander. That should be around $1000 or less for the pair of devices and give you 24 ports as well.

Hi again, what i want out of a raid card is raid/drive expantion without down time while rebuilding and battery backup to minimize the possibility of having to rebuild my array i.e power loss i do have a UPS though here is a pic of my system

i do like the 2760 above but it doesnt have any of my requirements noted here that the acerca 1880xi -24 does
i was also hoping to manage the array thru 1 card and to leave expanders to do just that. as you can see in my photo i have room for another 24 drive case 🙂
any othe thoughts
Hi Ray, after reading further you may be on to something, your card is growing on me
Online capacity expansion (OCE) and Online RAID level migration (ORLM)
Thanks
Hi welchwerks,
Thanks, I have been thinking about cards for a bit now ever since the news about the removal of DE. This card looks like a good bang for the buck, it allows for more then one raid configuration as well as drive exspansion on the fly.
Please do let me know if you find any downside to this card as I am in the same boat as you with a Norco 24 drive setup.
Stay in touch,
Ray
