Ian Dixon from The Digital Lifestyle writes up his experiences of installing Windows Home Server 2011 onto a HP ProLiant MicroServer.
Ian tells us how he upgraded the unit and then installed and configured WHS2011 on this MicroServer from HP and tells us about 2011’s Mac compatibility (or not!).

Hey I upgraded my MicroServer to WHS 2011. The install was fine – no problems. Also added a total 8GB ram. over kill I know. but the idea was to help processor as it min spec only.
the Dashboard can be a little slow to load but other wise its going good.
Haven’t tested Mac on yet need to add my sister laptop soon
Hi, just try the same on my HP microserver, but my installation exits with:
“win7 setup exited with 31″…
I already unplugged all other HDDs, set the server from raid to ide, tried another USB stick for installation….
Any idea? help would be very apreciated…
Hey Rayban,
Set the USB stick you want to install off to Forced FFD in the bios settings.
And make it #1 in the boot order, followed by the drive you installing to.
Tip: WHS2011 requires a min partition size of 20GB so with a few tweaks you can get it installed onto a 32GB USB stick plugged into the internal usb port on the motherboard 😉
Thanks iZikulu. I had the same exact issue with “win7 setup exited with 31” on my EX485 and this fixed the issue. I also disabled the SMC USB device in the BIOS as well.
