Windows 8 Storage Spaces – Not Worth Using for Anything Serious
PCDoc from the BYOB podcast has come to the conclusion that Windows 8 Storage Spaces feature is not up to par:

Although we must remember that Storage Spaces and Windows 8 is still in beta, it is good to know that we also have third party solutions in the form of StableBit DrivePool and Drive Bender.

I’m not surprised by this – The parity is calculated on write, but you should get near real time performance on read. This type of redundancy is intended for data that doesn’t change much (such as images, music, videos).
I would be interested to see what speeds you get with the duplication option.
1) Besides everything, it’s a BETA. Performance doesn’t matter yet
2) They explained that it’s for data that doesn’t change much. Write is slow, but read is fast. It would get me around 2TB of storage back by setting up parity for my movies compared to DrivePool right now, hence it’s great for that, even while slower. Saving 2TB? Yes, please.
But besides everything else: 1) IT’S A BETA
