A Big Server Upgrade – 21TB to be Exact

PCDoc wanted to upgrade his WHS 2011 box with faster and larger hard drives and after a lot of research settled on the Seagate ST3000DM001 3TB drives – 6 of them enabling him to have 21TB of storage.

not exactly, had to actually read the article to understand how he could get 21TB from 6 3TB drives ;-)… the math doesn’t add up, does it? 🙂

His system has the ability to be expanded up to 21TB, as he has 8 bays available and an 8-port RAID controller: using 3TB disks that would be 24TB, but since he’s running a RAID5 setup that would be 21TB max expandable…. but that’s the future.

As it sits now, he’s running 6 3TB disks in RAID5, one is a hot spare, so there are actually 5 active disks in that RAID5 configuration… giving him 12TB actual storage in this upgrade as it sits now.

  2. Thank you phaze for clarifying the total storage amount for me 🙂

Thanks for the clarification and the comments. You are correct as it is for future expansion which is not that far away.
