Two Editions Only for Windows 8 Plus Media Center available as an Add-In

Microsoft have announced that Windows 8 is the official product name for the next x86/64 editions of Windows and that there will only be two editions, Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro.

Windows 8 will be targeted towards consumers whilst Windows 8 Pro is targeted towards tech enthusiasts and business/technical professionals, and will include the following over the consumer edition:

  • BitLocker and BitLocker To Go
  • Boot from VHD
  • Client Hyper-V
  • Domain Join
  • Encrypting File System
  • Group Policy
  • Remote Desktop (host)
  • Upgrades from Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate (as well as Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic and Home Premium)

Windows on ARM or WOA is now officially known as Windows RT for would be Tablet purchasers and will include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote) and Device encryption as standard.

The other big news is Microsoft have also announced that Windows Media Center will be available as an economical “media pack” add-on to Windows 8 Pro only. As for economical there is no mention of price or what else will be included in this media pack.

InteliSAN LDisk has been updated to version 3.0.0.2.

WHS and LDisk

Due to a minor packaging issue in version 3.0.0.1 this latest version has been released. The packaging issue could affect the windows dashboard. You might not have noticed anything and there is no functional change, but InteliSAN decided to correct this and release this new package (3.0.0.2).

Restoring a 64-bit Computer Using WHS v1

InteliSAN have released version 3.0.0.1 of their LDisk Disk Pooling and iSCSI Target storage add-in for WHS-2011, WSS-e, and SBS-2011e.

Online backup provider KeepVault has updated their software to version 4.15

  • The max file size increases from 20GB to 200GB
  • Backup of password protected network shares is now supported
  • Better handling for backup of hidden files and folders

Virtual Machine hosting platform on WHS 2011

StableBit DrivePool the Drive Extender type add-in for WHSD 2011 users has had an update.

Version 1.0.1.6008 has the following changes:

  • When setting duplication on a read-only folder, it used to error out with access denied.
  • Do not error out on in-use duplicated files / other expected error conditions when removing disks from the pool.
