Installing the WHS 2011 Connector Software onto Windows 8

Windows 8 Consumer Preview Tile

If you are trying to install the WHS 2011 connector onto the Consumer Preview edition of Windows 8 then you will find that the installation process will hang at about the 90% completed mark.

The connector was working fine with the Developer edition of Windows 8 but there is a workaround which works for most users.

  1. Firstly make sure that the .NET 3.5 features are enabled via the Control Panel, More Settings, Programs, Turn Windows features on or off
  2. If this does not work then try installing the connector software as an administrator, which is accomplished by right-clicking on the installer and selecting the compatibility tab, select the "Change settings for all users" at the bottom and check the box next to "Run this program as an administrator" and OK twice.
  3. If the installation process still hangs then you can also try running the program in compatibility mode for Windows 7, which can be found in the upper part of the compatibility tab in the installers properties.

UPDATE: Microsoft have now published a TechNet Wiki article outlining the steps necessary to enable .Net Framework 3.5 as well as highlighting another issue where the power setting of the Client backup doesn’t work.

Windows Server 8 Storage Technologies

There are lots of great features in Windows Server "8" Beta including the Drive Extender type "Storage Spaces", native thin provisioning giving the appearance of more physical space than is actually available to you and the new Resilient File System (ReFS) providing automated corruption scanning and repair.

And what is this to do with Windows Home Server you may ask? Well, as you may know Windows Home Server is built upon Microsoft’s server offering and the next version of WHS will be built upon the Windows Server 8 storage technology. So now is a good time to learn about its storage features and we have plenty of great resource material for you.

Replacement Modified PSU for the HP MediaSmart and Data Vault Servers

If you have a HP MediaSmart or Data Vault Server and your power supply stops working then you may have a slight problem as you may find another replacement that fits but it will be wired differently as HP used a different wiring configuration for its PSUs.

But problems you will no longer have as OverTek LTD are offering a direct replacement which has had the wiring modified before shipping meaning you can just slip it in without doing any modification.

300w FLEX ATX PSU Modified for HP Servers

The supplied PSU is a 300w FLEX ATX PSU, at least 50W more than the one which came with the HP servers, its quiet at around 20dBA and it only costs $70 plus shipping.

WHS 2011 Computer Monitoring Error since UR2

I updated my install of Windows Home Server 2011 with Update Rollup 2 (UR2) and iv started to get a computer monitoring error popping up in my system tray and a warning alert in the Alert Viewer and it seems I am not the only one.

One user submitted a bug report for the issue and so far 30 users have stated that they can reproduce this bug. Community forums are reporting quite a few users are experiencing this issue too. So far Microsoft have responded with the following statement:

This alert is caused by an internal error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object", we are investigating the root cause, a quick workaround is you could "Ignore" this alert, do not "Delete".

Computer Monitoring Error in Alert Viewer

If you are experiencing this error too may i suggest that you report it here so this issue can be resolved.

Add-In: iHomeServer v2 (for iTunes) Build 2.1.32.0

iHomeServer v2 (for iTunes) has had an update which adds some new features:

  • New Features – Podcast updating, add new podcast, download podcast episodes added
  • Bug fixes: log file rotation, increased buffers between client and server; icon change on iTunes playlist view; some consoles might timeout their connection with the iHomeServer server – if this happens users will not get updates happening unless they press refresh – this behaviour has been fixed

“iHomeServer wraps iTunes so you can install and run it on a Windows Home Server, dedicated iTunes workstation or just a spare PC you have lying around. iHomeServer starts iTunes automatically when the computer starts, keeps it running and allows you to manage iTunes without having to physically access the computer, for example via the Windows Home Server Management Console. It also makes it really easy to add new media to your iTunes Media Server.”

iHomeServer 2 - Watch Folder View

Available for both WHS v1 and WHS 2011 iHomeServer v2 (for iTunes) is  available as a 30 day trial, after which it will cost you $30
