Entertainment 2.0 – The WHS 2011 Episode

WHS 2011 Banner

This weeks edition of the Entertainment 2.0 podcast is all about Windows Home Server 2011.

For episode 147 of the Entertainment 2.0 podcast Josh Pollard had the opportunity to sit down with Microsoft Windows Home Server MVP Dave McCabe, and host of the BYOB podcast, Mike Faucher, to talk about Windows Home Server 2011. Richard Gunther wasn’t able to join the show, but there was enough knowledge oozing from the guests that I think it made up for it! In addition to being a Microsoft MVP, Dave McCabe hosts a podcast called The Home Server Show where they discuss the latest news around Windows Home Server every single week. Mike Faucher, no stranger to the show, hosts the Build Your Own Box podcast where they discuss computer hardware and quite frequently discuss their own Windows Home Server builds. These two guys were able to explain to us what the newest version of Windows Home Server brings to the table, why you should use it, and some recommend hardware ideas if you would like to build your own server.

This episode is great for those of you who don’t know a lot about WHS 2011 or those of you who would like a recap of its features.

You can catch it here.

Setup WHS with CrashPlan

Using Windows Home Server with CrashPlan?

No, then you should do as it is presently one of the cheapest and best solutions for backing up Windows Home Server to the cloud.

WHS and CrashPlan

Although CrashPlan does not have a dedicated add-in for Home Server users it is very easy to set up:

  • For v1 users just follow this guide.
  • WHS 2011 users just need to choose the drive letters to backup (since WHS 2011 does not use Drive Extender there will not be any corruption issues with using this method)

Finally do NOT use v1 of WHS as a backup destination for CrashPlan as this could cause file corruption issues.

The Kentucky SBS User Group (KYSBSUG) has an open invite for a talk on Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials.

There has been a lot of talk about Windows Storage Server Essentials 2008 R2 (formerly code named "Breckenridge"). http://blogs.technet.com/b/storageserver/archive/2010/11/08/announcing-windows-storage-server-2008-r2-essentials.aspx

Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much in the way of hardware from vendors. Good news though – this month Kevin Royalty [SBS-MVP] is coming to Louisville to show both the software AND the hardware available for WSSE.

Taking place on Thursday October 13th 2011 (6:30-9:00 PM Eastern), speaker in Royalty [SBS-MVP] is going to Louisville to show the software AND hardware available for Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials.
