WHS Pioneer Leaving Microsoft

Windows Home Server pioneer Charlie Kindel today announced that he will be leaving Microsoft after 21 years.

Charlie Kindel Windows Phone 7

Charlie originally joined Microsoft in 1990 in developer support for systems products and later in 1999 thought of the Windows Home Server concept which originally started as the Quattro project 5 years later. Charlie finally started the Windows Home Server product group in April 2005, bringing a Home Server product to the masses when he became the Windows Home Server Product Unit Manager (PUM) until February 2009, when he switched to Windows Phone.

In his blog post Charlie says he is planning to build a new company based in Seattle to do with sports, advertising, mobile, social-networking, and, of course, the cloud after he leaves Microsoft on September 2nd.

Stablebit_drivepool_logo

Here is their 1.0.0.3292 version change log:

  • Made the Dashboard details presenters display a reboot required message when the server needs rebooting instead of "Error starting service".
  • Fixed anti-flicker code in the Dashboard.
  • Fixed device not ready errors when moving / renaming files on the pool.
  • Fixed rare file not found errors that were being thrown when creating new files / moving existing files.

For more information on what StableBit DrivePool can do for your WHS 2011 build, see here.

Add-In: StableBit DrivePool Build 3267

Two more releases for StableBit DrivePool, the DE replacement add-in for WHS 2011 users.

Stablebit_drivepool_logo

The first was build 3262:

  • Fixed the annoying issue of folder names being upper cased. This fix should stop it from happening in the future.
  • Fixed bug in code that takes a file out of service.
  • Incomplete file repair task now correctly detects files that were out of service and were brought back into service. It now correctly removes the out of service tag.
  • Out of service files are not repaired.
  • Incomplete file repair task now correctly repairs incomplete directories as well (they were being detected but not repaired). Security / attributes / access times / alternate streams are of course preserved across repairs.
  • Fixed unduplicated file detection to not throw up an error if the file part being opened is taken out of service.

Which was followed by build 3267 with the following changes:

  • Renaming a folder to the same name would make it disappear from Dashboard.
  • Regenerating files would sometimes throw a null exception.
  • Access denied on folder duplication change could un-share the folder.

Add-In: Windows 7 Professional Pack

The add-in "Windows 7 Professional Pack" is available for SBS 2011 Essentials users.

Available from Friday August 12th from the Microsoft Download Center, the add-in ties together Windows 7 Professional and Windows SBS 2011 Essentials so you can easily deploy pre-configured security settings, folder redirection and offline files from the “Computers and Backup” tab in the Dashboard to each Windows 7 Professional computer in the domain.

Windows 7 Professional Pack Group Policy

These pre-configured security settings can then be deployed across several different areas like allowing Windows Update to install the latest security patches and critical updates, using Windows Defender to protect against malware attacks and preventing users from exposing the network to attack by enforcing the use of Windows Firewall.

These group policies apply to all SBS domain users running Windows 7 Professional or higher including Ultimate and Enterprise.

Here is a complete demo of the Windows 7 Pro Pack:

AVA Media Video Transcoder for V1 Free

Tranquil PC are offering the AVA Media Add In for WHS V1 users for free.

AVA Media Video Transcoder Settings

The add-in is useful for transcoding ripped video discs to a format suited for streaming to DLNA devices, such as a DLNA TV, PS3, Apple TV etc is very simple to use, and just requires the user to point to a source folder and one or two (new) targets. The first target is normally for DNLA devices (ie original screen format), and the second if selected could be used for Apple TV.

Once conversion is done you can delete the original film (folder). Do note that if the server is re-started half way through a transcode, then that film will not be completed, neither will the film be processed at a later time.

To get the Add-in, send an email to AVAVIDTRANS@ixlspc.com and within a few minutes you should get back an email with a download link, and although Tranquil do not ask for any payment, they do welcome any donations to their chosen charity MacMillan – and they welcome you to send a small PayPal donation to pp@tranquilpc.co.uk
