Problem Installing WHS2011 with a French Keyboard

If you are installing WHS 2011 and have a French keyboard, then the keyboard layout may be incorrectly changed to that of an English keyboard.

To resolve this problem you will need to manually change the keyboard layout to French on the language bar by performing the following steps on the server itself by using Remote Desktop or by opening the Dashboard, Server Settings, General tab then the Change button next to “Region and language of administrator” :

  1. On the Language bar, click the Input language button, and then select an input language.
  2. Click the Keyboard layout button, and then select a keyboard layout.

Note: If you don’t see the Language bar, right-click the taskbar, point to Toolbars, and then click Language bar.

TomOnTech Logo

TomOnTech explains how to remove your Mac from being connected to Windows Home Server 2011. Tom explains why you may want to do this:

“If you’re like me and have multiple servers that all use the same type of connector software and are testing things out or just want to remove your Mac from being connected to your Windows Home Server 2011, Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, or Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials server, then these are the steps for you.”

And those steps you can find here.

WHS 2011 Online Experience Password Error

If you are not in the US and have been trying to access the online evaluation experience for WHS 2011 than you may have experienced problems trying to access it. The Evaluation Guide asks you to log into the user account screen and the Dashboard using the password "pass@word1", but upon doing so I got the following error message:

WHS 2011 Online Experience Password Error

We have all seen the user name or password is incorrect error message before and I retried just in case the finger slipped but once again the same error message. After a quick scratch of the grey matter and restarting the hyper V experience I released that the @ symbol is at another location on a US keyboard (above the number 2 key) and with myself residing in the UK the keyboard layout is different. So typing "pass" then shift 2 (for @) then "word 1" got me in.

So just to clarify if you are using a non US keyboard you need to press the Shift key plus the number 2 key for the @ symbol.

WHS 2011 Online Experience Launches

Microsoft have just launched the online evaluation experience for WHS 2011.

As Microsoft stated on its launch, there would be no evaluation media or download for WHS2011 as was the case for v1, but this time a virtual experience would be made available for users to demo and experience the product, in the following areas:

  • Adding a user
  • Using the client Launchpad
  • Managing PCs to ensure its health and security
  • Protecting the server and PC’s data
  • Adding server storage capacity
  • Using Remote Web Access

“This provides customers the ability to walk through both client and server interaction freely, or follow a suggested demonstration path with the evaluation manual which will also launch with the online experience. Available 24 hours per day, it provides a super simple way to experience WHS without the need for hardware.”

The virtual experience is also supplied with a 33 page evaluation guide which can also be downloaded.

WHS 2011 Evaluation Guide

Microsoft have also stated that the reason a downloadable evaluation version would not be available this time round was because that some of the embedded third-party codecs they use within WHS 2011 does not allow them to provide a trial version due to licensing agreements.

Until Microsoft’s WHS ms.com website becomes updated during the coming weeks you can find the WHS 2011 online evaluation experience on its temporary launching site here.
