Storing Live Writer’s Posts on WHS

If you use the blog writing software Windows Live Writer then did you know that there is a way of fooling it, so you can store both your drafts and published posts on your Windows Home Server enabling you to access them on any computer on your home network or via the WHS remote access web page.

Hard Drive Failing Noises

Every hard drive makes a certain noise before it is about to fail and every brand and even models within that brand make slightly different noises. Luckily for us data recovery company Data Cent has put together a catalogue of drive failing noises from the likes of Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor, Samsung etc which is good to check against if your hard drive begins to start making noises.

Why a Microsoft Employee Uses WHS V2

Keen amateur photographer and Microsoft employee Sean Daniel tells us why he shall be using the new Windows Home Server 2011.

Sean tells us that removing DE was a very tough decision, but why he agrees with its removal given what he knows (and he should know more than all of us since he works on the team at Microsoft) and then takes us through the various features including remote access and why it is so awesome:

The ability to download or the ability to move files around without having to download.  Yes, that’s right, delete, copy, cut and paste things all over the shared folders without actually having to download it.

He then explains the remote Silverlight video streaming feature and why his data is safe on WHS 2011:

…I feel like Windows Home Server 2011 is the right product for me, for simplified access to my data. Simplified Management of my network, and extremely safe data protection plans.  Moreover, because it’s Windows, it just works with other things in my house.
I liked Drive Extender too, but the product isn’t dead, in fact, it’s still awesome!

With all the excitement of Windows Home Server 2011 RC being released yesterday it nearly slipped under our radar that the RC of Small Business Server 2011 Essentials (also known as codename Aurora) also became available too.

Ideal as a first server for small businesses with up to 25 users, you can learn more by viewing the 15 3-5 minute videos which focus on Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials core features and functionality.

To help beta test or evaluate, you can find a copy on Microsoft’s beta Connect website.

Updated WHS2011 SDK Available

With the RC release of Windows Home Server 2011 also comes an updated Windows Server Solutions SDK which provides tools and information to help developers develop their add-ins, and extend the functionality of Windows Home Server 2011.

And on connect you can download the Windows Server Solutions SDK Preview which includes an .msi file to install the Windows Server Solutions SDK Templates and Samples .

The samples and templates have been updated in this release and a new installation program will copy the files to the appropriate Visual Studio 2010 directories.

Windows Home Server 2011 Shadow Copies

Windows Home Server 2011 now includes a Previous Version feature which enables users to recover files which they may have accidently deleted. Also known as Shadow Copies this OS feature is enabled for shared folders by default and are created twice a day at 06:00 and 13:00 hours.

If you now accidently delete a file on a share or on a folder, you can use previous versions to recover that file without relying on a server backup. A nice addition for WHS users!

Vail is Windows Home Server 2011 – RC Available Now

Today sees the availability of the RC (Release Candidate) of Windows Home Server Vail and the final name of the product has been released too. Drum roll please:

“Windows Home Server 2011”

With Windows Home Server 2011 RC now being available, it means that RTM (Release To Manufacture) is not to far away, and we all should be getting our grubby hands on the final release version very soon.

This RC release is the first publicly released version to include changes in the storage features due to the removal of DE (Drive Extender) and now includes:

  • A new Move Folder Wizard which makes it easy for you to move data from one drive to another.  As you add Hard Drives to the Home Server, health alerts will notify you that a new Hard Drive is available. From here, you can automatically format and configure the new drive for additional storage and then easily use the Move Folder Wizard to move your data to the new drive as needed.

WHS2011 Move a Folder Wizard

As you can see in this WHS2011 Learning Bite Video:

  • Data protection also includes daily Server and PC backup, Previous Versions via Shadow copy which lets you return prior versions of existing files (without needing to restore from backup), and a protection feature for pre-defined folders (such as Recorded TV, Videos, Photos) in case these are accidently deleted.

So head on over to the Windows Home Server site on Microsoft’s Connect beta site for a copy of the RC download.
