How To Stream Content from WHS to a Playstation 3

Beware WD Green Hard Drives

If you have any of the Western Digital (WD) Green hard drives are you experiencing random errors or low performance during reading and writing?

If so, then you are not alone. It appears that certain models of the WD Green drives will eventually give low performance during the reading and writing of data. This has been seen by at least one user and by NAS producer Synology.

From information gathered from different sources, the only reliable models in the Green range from WD are the following:

  • 2TB: WD20EADS-00R6B0
  • 1.5TB: WD15EADS-00R6B0
  • 1TB: WD10EADS-00L5B1

Locating and Installing Network Drivers for WHS

With Windows Home Server not detecting certain NIC network drivers during the install process, Kelvyn Taylor has a post on how to locate the drivers for both Realtek and Intel.

Kelvyn directs us to a generic Realtek driver and explains where to find and install the Intel driver onto a USB key.

DVBLink Version 3 Update

We announced last week that DVBLogic had released version 3 of the DVBLink Server Network Pack. The good news now is that DVBLink TVSource is now at version 3 too as well as all their other DVBLink products.

Who is the Best Hard Drive Manufacturer?

ServeTheHome.com have a great article on who is the best hard drive manufacturer according to the ratings on Newegg.

The article looks at 1TB, 1.5TB, and 2TB internal drives and asks questions such as "Are drives larger than 1TB less reliable than 1TB drives?" and are OEM drives better than retail ones.

Setup TwonkyServer 6 on WHS

A Product Manager for Twonky announced last week 9th June 2010) that starting with TwonkyServer version 6.0 there will no longer be a dedicated Windows Home Server build of the media streaming software. This was because the normal versions of TwonkyServer being much more stable and better performing due to them getting more testing and bugs being fixed much more quickly on these releases.

This does not mean that Windows Home Server is no longer supported by TwonkyServer, as the standard Windows version of the software can be installed on either XP, Vista, Windows 7 or WHS.

But to install this latest version you need to connect to Home Server using remote desktop and create the share folder and configure TwonkyServer for it to work, and luckily for us Twonky have released a 8 page PDF document which takes you through these details, which you can download from here.
