Make Recorded TV Appear in Windows 7 Libraries

Windows 7 users have "Libraries" that exist on a per-user basis, but Public Libraries don’t appear in a user’s list and the Recorded TV Library is only visible in Windows Explorer after a user has configured a TV Tuner from within Windows Media Center.

Although this behavior is ideal for networks where only a Windows Home Server is used for storing Recorded TV, in the multiple PC home Recorded TV is frequently stored on multiple machines and/or multiple folders on various machines.

And if this is so for you then there is a solution that will allow you to configure the built-in Recorded TV library from within Windows Explorer on machines that don’t have a tuner card installed, which you can find here.

A Cheaper SAS Enclosure Project

ServerTheHome.com has details on how to add more storage to an existing server by adding a second (or third) enclosure for additional disks.

Specifically a large JBOD enclosure with SAS expanders built-in which can often range in the $2,000 to over $3,000 per 3U or 4U enclosure, but by following the post you can complete it for half that, or even potentially less.

The unit will be able to support over 40TB of data today, and by the end of 2010 when the 3Tb and 4TB disks are out will scale to 60TB to 80TB in a single 4U enclosure…There are very few DIY hardware projects that can save so much money so easily.

Norco RPC-4220 DAS-SAS Expander Enclosure

Using a 4U case, a HP SAS Expander card and a cheap motherboard (with no CPU or memory necessary!), this is a very interesting build project indeed.

“The password is incorrect” Error Message in Windows 7

Windows Home Server enthusiast Tim Keller was continually told the server’s password he was entering was incorrect when installing the connector software on his Windows 7 PC, even though he know it was not.

Eventually he found the solution, which was to change the LAN Manager authentication level to sending a NTLM response only.

So if you are running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate and receive:

“The password is incorrect.  Please retype your password.  Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case.”

And you know that the password you are entering is correct, then Tim has the 5 steps necessary to resolve this problem, which you can find here.

We Got Served forum member Boostin4HP has got the HP MediaSmart Server 3.0 software working with his HP LX195.

By using his purchased EX48x Recovery CD and the internet for downloading some missing drivers for various devices, Boostin4HP had a LX195 posing as a EX48x model. Although he does recommend upgrading the memory from stock to 2GB.

DE Technology in Vail – A Guide from Diskeeper

Diskeeper being a Gold Partner with Microsoft are very happy that many of their suggestions and requests have been accommodated within the new Drive Extender (DE) technology in Vail.

Diskeeper who produce a defrag solution for WHS users in the form of "Diskeeper 2010 Home Server Edition", have a great post on their blog explaining how the WHS V2 Drive Extender technology works:

What you effectively have with Drive Extender, then and now, is storage virtualization. Any time you pool storage and then divvy it up exclusively to requestors (in this case the shared folders that become lettered volumes) you need some form of logic for allocating data from the pool. SAN and virtualization administrators already understand this concept, including related technologies such as Thin Provisioning.

DE 2.0 now adds this to their storage virtualization solution. As you add more data to a shared folder, DE 2.0 will allocate, in 1 GB chunks, more space to the shared folder/volume from the common storage pool. And, should you delete ALL the data in a 1 GB chunk, the 1 GB chunk will dynamically return to the available storage pool to be allocated to any other shared folder that may need the space. DE is well designed to fill up 1 GB chunk before requesting to use more. Very cool stuff!

A great post for those of you wishing to know more about the new technology in Windows Home Server codename "Vail", which you can find here.

Add-In: WHS Outlook 2.5.7.7

WHS Outlook has been updated to version 2.5.7.7, with the biggest change being support for Outlook 2010.

WHSOL2010 Inbox

One of the other changes in this new version is that calendar sharing is now supported if you are using either Outlook 2007 or 2010:

First, WHS Outlook can automatically setup your Windows Home Server as a WebDAV server allowing you to publish and consume Outlook calendars as Internet Calendars directly on your very own Windows Home Server. Second, WHS Outlook now supports SharePoint site integration allowing you to use SharePoint’s "Connect to Outlook" feature from within WHS Outlook so that you can access all of your SharePoint Lists (i.e. shared calendars, contacts, tasks, etc.) from within Outlook. WHS Outlook takes care of all the dirty details for you behind-the-scenes allowing you to focus on getting your work done instead of having to spend time configuring your home server.

WHSOL2010 Settings

Other changes include:

  • Reworked "Send Attachment (to client)" feature
  • Added a new "Sounds" command to the Settings menu
  • When running WHS Outlook via the WHS Console it now re-sizes to fill the entire size of the Condole
  • WHS Outlook Connector now gives tray notifications for reminders in WHS Outlook
  • Initialization of WHS Outlook now takes place whenever you click on the "Configure" button in WHS Outlook Settings
  • Fixed the "Switch Profile" functionality (that became broken somewhere down the line during a past update)
  • Fixed problem with opening URLs on the client computer that contained a pipe ("|") character
  • Many other fixes, enhancements, and miscellaneous code improvements
  • Fully translated into German and French languages

The good news is that this huge update is completely FREE to all existing WHS Outlook V2 licensees.
