MediaSmart 3.0 Patch 2 Software Available

MediaSmartServer.net are reporting that an update is available for EX49x MediaSmart and Storageworks X510 DataVault owners.

The 36 meg download package is for all languages and is for all hardware versions of the MediaSmart Server that are running the 3.0 software (inc. the EX47x and EX48x updated with the 3.0 software but NOT the LX19x series).

The 3.0 Patch 2 software includes the following 2 changes:

  • Version 5.1.1 of the Twonky Media Streamer which will reduce CPU load when the media streamer is scanning for media
  • New client software for Mac users which provides several improvements for the Mac backup feature

This update is currently NOT available via the inbuilt HP software Update but is available as a manual download. MediaSmartServer.net has details on how to download and install the update manually, but I do recommend that you wait for the automatic update to come down from HP.

SSD Compared with HDs

Website "Missing Remote" have a short post where they look at Solid State drives (SSD) compared with the more familiar Hard drive (HD).

They compare the power usage and drive temperature of an Intel SSD with a 2.5" Toshiba 5200RPM drive and a 3.5" Seagate 7200RPM drive.

An interesting read which you can find here.

Add-In: WHS Mobile 1.5.4.0

The add-in WHS Mobile has been updated to version 1.5.4.0 and brings embedded icons, fixes foreign characters, fixes the alert number in the app icon, and more.

Change Log:

  • Fixed: Spaces in user names with streaming. Had left some code out by mistake.
  • Fixed: Japanese/Chinese characters in files and folders making the folder/file not load properly.
  • Added: Uploading an image from your iPhone’s storage or camera will not ask for a file name anymore. Instead, the name is auto-generated from the date and time.
  • Added: Embedded icons for shares, folders, and most file types. Share and folder icons can be overridden with a “folder.jpg” file inside said folder/share.
  • Fixed: Handling of folders with mp3s if a folder.jpg file was not found as well (would show an error in the Event Log).
  • Added: Swipe to the right to show a “delete” button in the file tab. Tap to delete or swipe back to the left to hide.
  • Changed: XML to JSON in an attempt to speed up browsing.
  • Changed: Application badge (number) not clearing as it should. Made the app clear the badge on start. Was originally supposed to do that when the notification was cleared on the WHS.
  • Changed: Thumbnails are resized keeping the aspect ratio (again)
  • Changed: Optimized memory usage and fixed some leaks
  • Changed: Made some other tweaks as when I changed from XML to JSON.

Watch WHS Videos on the iPhone

The Air Video app for iPhone users is great for Windows Home Server users. Just point it to your Videos folder and you have access to your entire video library. HP makes a similar solution for their own home servers, in the form of iStream but it is nowhere near as functional and simple as Air Video.

Minnaar Pieters has a great review of the app here.

The app is currently priced at $1.99 (£1.19) in the appstore and you install the free Air Video Server onto WHS.
