HP MediaSmart Server EX490 and EX495 Announced

Today HP has announced their 3rd generation of MediaSmart Server’s, known as the EX49x range.

Comprising the EX490 and EX495, both Home Server’s this time round only come with 1 hard drive. A 1TB drive in the EX490 and a 1.5TB drive in the EX495, although space is still provided for up to 3 additional internal hard drives. Actually both units look exactly the same as the previous models, although under the hood both are powered differently this time round. The EX490 by a Intel Celeron 2.2GHz 64-bit processor and the EX495 by a beefier Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.5GHz 64-bit CPU, which is great for doing intensive tasks like video conversion.

What’s been added to the software since the EX48x?

-A more simple web based interface to quickly and easily access your media from home or when on the road.

-Additional Mac integration:

  • For hard disk recovery.
  • Automatic media collection includes Mac iPhoto, iTunes, and iMovie libraries.
  • Now you can easily administer your MediaSmart Server directly from your Mac using the new Mac Server Administrator Page.

-New administrator console with intuitive user controls for easy setup, configuration, and server status checks.

-New video converter to create custom profiles and control how videos are converted by selecting the device your video will be played on or by specifying the video settings yourself.

-Enhanced media collector:

  • Faster media collection – The server is optimized to work in the background and relies less on the computer’s processor.
  • Customizable collections (by media type, location, and computer).
  • Improved status feedback.

-New “Add software” Web link for server add-ins and client software integrated in the “Add Software” tab of the console

-Improved video conversion speed – Up to 7x faster than servers with an Atom processor.

What’s it going to cost me?

The EX490 will be available for $549 whilst the EX495 will be priced at $699, just a $150 difference between the 2 models. Is it worth the difference for the EX495? In my opinion, if you are going to be doing CPU intensive stuff like video conversion, or have a ton of add-ins doing everything bar the ironing – Yes, I would recommend the beefier dual core processor.

With the prices of hard drives continually falling I think it is a good move on HPs part to now distinguish their MediaSmart EX49x range with something different compared with the 1 hard drive in one model and 2 in the higher priced unit. Moving forward dual core is the way to go – for most, and the software on the MediaSmart range just goes far and beyond what Windows Home Server is and does.

It wont be long till the HP MediaSmart Server will be available for pre-order in the USA and Europe – Have you got your credit card ready?

TwonkyMedia Server 5.1 for WHS Available

TwonkyMedia 5.1

TwonkyMedia Server 5.1 has been released mainly to improve performance issues and is also now Windows 7 compliant, but the best news is that there is now a version specially for us Windows Home Server users.

Owners of the HP and Fujitsu WHS retail boxes have had a copy of TwonkyMedia Server as part of the install process and now the rest of us can purchase a copy too.

TwonkyMedia Server is available for $29.95 or €19.95.

You can download the msi installation file here, which you should place into your add-ins directory.

Send WHS to Sleep and Wake it up Again

Imagine this:-

You have your Home Server configured to wake up for a couple of hours a day to perform backups and then go back to sleep, which is made possible via the LightsOut add-in. However to use your Home Server outside of these hours you can send it a WakeOnLan (WOL) request to wake it up without physically switching the machine on.

But how do you send it back to sleep?

Poweroff

By using a third party application called Poweroff and the add-in Advanced Admin Console you can easily send your server back to sleep via a toolbar button. And if you want to know all the details, they are available from here.

iTunes 9 on Windows Home Server

iTunes 9

With the new iTunes 9 being made available from Apple, some have been asking how to install a copy onto Windows Home Server, enabling you to use the Home Sharing function to copy and share media over your LAN connection.

With a little hacking and a follow of the following seven step guide, you should be good to go.

Xtreamer – Media Player and Streamer

The Xtreamer is a media player and streamer that enables you to play and stream movies and videos, listen to your music collection and show slideshows of your photos on your TV.

This device enables you to display all your media that is stored away on other machines on your home network, including of course your Windows Home Server machine. Connection to your television is through HDMI, (cable not provided), or component audio/video cables, so if you have an older TV you will have problem connecting via the old co-ax type connection unless you have some kind of intermediate converter. However as this device is all about High Definition Video and Audio, it would be rather a waste to connect it to your older television – a good excuse to upgrade to the latest HD televisions!

Expanding the Acer Aspire easyStore Storage Capacity

Kam Lau from KAMLAU.COM has a great guide on setting up eSata port multiplication with the Acer Aspire easyStore using a eSATA PCI-X port multiplier card included with a Sans Digital TowerRAID Direct-Attached Storage (DAS) unit.

Acer and Sans Digital TowerRAID

What does this mean?

Basically when your storage capacity runs out on the Acer you can use a DAS unit (like the Sans Digital TowerRAID) for additional storage space. In this example 4 hard drive slots in the Acer and 4 more in the Sans Digital TowerRAID TR4M-B. An impressive 8 hard drive slots!

Niveus Adding WHS Requirement

Today was the 1st day at CEDIA 2009 in Atlanta, a trade event for the residential custom installation industry and on display by Microsoft was a home server powered by the Windows Home Server software.

Also on display was Niveus, a high end software and systems company who announced that it will be adding a Windows Home Server requirement for its full system restoration capabilities on its Media Server range of products:

New & Updated Features for 2010

…Niveus is making a number of changes to the Niveus Media Server architecture to further ensure fault tolerance. By incorporating Solid State Hard drives and adding Hard Drive Mirroring (RAID 1) across the Pro Series server line, Niveus will increase the reliability of its servers and minimize customer downtime due to hard drive failure. In addition, the recommended architecture now requires a Windows Home Server product such as the Niveus Cargo Storage Server to ensure the centralization of storage in the home network and data protection provided by the Home Server System Image Backup feature.
