Windows Small Office, Home Office and Home Server

Microsoft have opened a sub-section on their WHS site for Small Office and Home Office (SOHO) users to promote Windows Home Server as a backup solution for the small business user.

The site has five case study videos to watch as well as five matching documents to download and read, and as it states on the site:

“Don’t be fooled by the name. Windows Home Server was designed as a solution that is as functional in a small office setting as it is in your home…”

All the details are here.

Your Friends and Family Could be a Threat to WHS

Part 11 Securing Your WHS & Network is available on Home Server Land

Threats and risks can be experienced by allowing friends and other family to access the files on the WHS via the Internet.   The role of the administrator is explained and methods that can reduce the administrative burden are identified.  Alternative methods to protect your Windows Home Server and networked computers from unauthorized use are proposed.

Part 11 of this informative series which also discusses how to securely share files can be found here.

WHS Password Mismatch with Windows 7

windows7logo

The Home Server Show website is reporting that users of the 64 bit version of the Windows 7 Release Candidate (Build 7100) are having a problem connecting their machine to their Windows Home Server.

Although the connector software installs correctly the client then alerts you that your Windows 7 machine and WHS passwords are not the same, although they are.  When trying to enter the passwords in the prompt to fix the problem, the WHS password is not accepted.

A solution was posted in Microsoft’s WHS Software forum by user "Dan" which corrects the problem and is duplicated on The Home Server Show website here for you.

WHS ProductID GUID and More

jcarle.com has published a list of undocumented Microsoft ProductID GUIDs.

Each Microsoft product is identified internally using a ProductID that is in the form of a Globally Unique Identifier or GUID. For those that ever want to develop software that digs into some of Microsoft’s software internals, you’ll quickly find that without a way to map those GUIDs, most of the data is meaningless. But with this list the meaning of life should become clearer 🙂
