An Encrypted Peer Based Offsite Backup Service

Would you be prepared to pay $25 per year for an encrypted peer to peer based offsite backup service?

This is the question being asked by Damian Meher, who is thinking of developing such a system with an add-in for Windows Home Server users which would hook people’s Home Servers together.

My idea is this: I’d create a web site where people could register (probably automatically via the add-in) their need for an off-site backup, indicating how much space they need to backup. They need to commit to making an equivalent amount of space available on their computer for someone else.

My web site would match people up, and then the people could use each others systems to automatically perform offsite backups.  The add-ins could talk to each other, either peer-to-peer, or via my web site…

Add-In: Media Connect Configuration

Power Pack 2 came with a Media Connect Configuration application for fine tuning media shares and showing which devices have access.

Since Microsoft didn’t make a UI for the program (c:\program files\media connect\WMCCFG.exe), developer Pål Andreassen has made an add-in which starts WMCCFG.exe and then docks the UI inside the WHS Console, allowing for more fine grain control over devices and folders than the standard "Media Share" settings tab does.

The add-in parses and displays the IIS log files and allows you to see who is looking at your WHS box via the web. It also has buttons for WhoIs, Geolocation, and DNS lookup for the IP addresses, and new in this release, the ability to block IP addresses.

Clevery Mini HomeServer SP9C WHS in Japan

Computer store Clevery which is based in Akihabara in Japan have announced their Mini HomeServer SP9C WHS.

The unit comprises 2TB of storage space (2x 1TB), 1GB of PC5300 RAM and an Intel Atom 330 Dual Core running at 1.6GHz. The famous Japanese store have said that the unit will sell for 65800 Yen (€490)
