WHS Disturbed our Daily Workflow

After searching for a server and centralized backup solution for his business, Christoph Buenger uninstalled Windows Home Server and instead installed Windows 2008 Datacenter.

Chris says that the reason for the uninstall was because there was a delay in accessing mapped shared folders and that Windows XP/Vista showed the incorrect drive size.

WHS Vail and Windows 7 – The Tip Bits

Now that the next major version of Windows Home Server (codenamed Vail) will be available sometime in 2010, it’s time to look at some of the details of Windows 7 the platform that Vail will be based on:

  • Only one more release candidate (RC) and then it will be shipping to the customer (RTM).
  • RTM will be sometime this year (2009).
  • Customers who buy Windows Vista machines as of July 1 2009 will get the appropriate free upgrade to Windows 7 once it ships.

And the differences between Vista and Windows 7 versions are:

  • Windows Vista Home Premium – Windows 7 Home Premium
  • Windows Vista Business – Windows 7 Professional 
  • Windows Vista Ultimate – Windows 7 Ultimate

The Home Server Show #29

The Home Server Show Podcast

The Home Server Show #29 podcast comes from CES in Las Vegas. Chatting this week is Windows Home Server Product Manager Todd Headrick who tells us that the team is working on a minor and major release of WHS at the same time.

Todd tells us that the minor release will extend the functionality of the current product and is currently in beta and once released will be available via the Microsoft Download Center.

Meanwhile work continues on the major release (codenamed Vail) and early iterations of the product have been up and running for 6 months now. Vail is based on the Windows 7 platform and will be probably be available in 2010.

Windows Home Server Trial Available for Download

The evaluation version of Windows Home Server with Power Pack 1 was only available on CD/DVD direct from Microsoft, but as from today you can now download a copy direct from Microsoft’s Download Center.
