Jungle Disk is an online backup solution for Windows Home server and the next major release is in deep development and should be available in beta shortly. The biggest change to this new 2.50 version is the ability for it to run as a background service on all platforms as well as a range of major new features. This release will lay the groundwork for the next major iteration of home server backup.
Jungle Disk Inc. stated in their blog that:
The Windows Home Server version of Jungle Disk was originally a bit of an experiment, to help understand the demand and needs of the Home Server / Home NAS backup market. One of the most important things we’ve learned over the last year is that the Windows Home Server platform alone isn’t really large enough to justify a stand-alone product, but there is a large amount of interest in online backup from users with other brands of home NAS devices…
So Jungle Disk will be supporting a range of NAS devices along with Windows Home Server and the separation of the backup service from the GUI in the 2.50 release will be a key step in allowing this to be done.
The porting of the software to these other devices will take some time, but in the end they plan to provide a unified online backup solution for the entire home server and NAS market.
