Todd Headrick also known as "todd the product planner" of the WHS team is asking what you would think if their were 2 versions of Windows Home Server. One for the “basic” household and one for the “advanced” household. If this was the case what would be the user limit for each version, as at the moment WHS can be used by up to 10 users with no more than 10 computers.
As Todd states “their are rare occasions where someone has 11 computers or 12 or 17 or ? in their home”, so leave your thoughts and feedback to be taken into consideration for the next version of Windows Home Server.

From the Custom Electronic Trade Show – CEDIA EXPO 2008, in Denver, Colorado come details of 2 rack mounted Windows Home Server systems, with the first more than likely designed for the custom installation market. Niveus Storage Server – Cargo Edition, which allows you to store up to 16TB of data! And if that wasn’t impressive enough, the Cargo is housed in a 3U rack-mountable chassis measuring 18.5” in depth and representing the most compact storage server in the custom electronics industry. The unit has a hinge on the front panel and also supports the VideoGiants movie packages and will be available from Q4 of 2008.

Next up is the WHS500 from S1Digital which is a one-rack Windows Home Server, designed specifically for the custom installation channel. The WHS500 has a 4-terabyte capacity.

The Camera Owners of the Bay Area (COBA) user group September meeting will discuss Windows Home Server alongside video and photography convergence.
Edward Casati of Unbound Photography has recently switched to using WHS as his main ‘bulk’ file storage system after outgrowing his ReadyNAS. He built his own with some extra hardware that he had and has been pleased with its performance.

This version contains a whole set of new features:
– Fixed problem with installer, a file (interop.whsinfoif.dll) was deleted that was shared with another add-in.
– The MAC address was not always retrieved correctly (00-00-00-00-00-00) and an error appeared ‘Object
Reference Not Set to an instance’.
– It is now possible to set the Mac address manually for a client. When set to empty, the MAC address is deleted.
– The state of the machine didn’t always match with reality because the list wasn’t refreshed yet.
This enabled the user to still use the right click menu.
Now the actual state is checked before the action is performed.
– More understandable error messages are now shown, when errors occur.
– A client application is now available for the client machine. This client allows more shutdown options and less
configuration work compared to the previous version. It also allows the support of the basic Windows editions
that were not supported in the previous version.
– New Action: Sleep
– New Action: Hibernate
– New Action: Log off
– New Action: Lock Workstation.
– Shutting down the server is also supported now.
– Check for updates of AutoExit.
– Refreshing doesn’t interfere with selection anymore, when the popup menu is open.

You may have noticed that over at the official Windows Home Server forums that the new forum platform is complete. This now provides increased performance, stability, and an improved user experience.
The new link is now http://forums.community.microsoft.com/en-US/tag/windowshomeserver/, whilst the old URL (http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsHomeServer/default.aspx?siteid=50) will be redirected to the new one once a topic is chosen.

Available from mid-September will be Shuttle’s Atom powered X27 mini desktop. The small PC will start from $189 for just a barebones rig — no chip, memory or hard drive. Fully spec’d with an Atom, you’re looking at $500+ in the emerging Nettop category using Intel’s low power Atom processor and is an ideal home for a DIY Windows Home Server build, although a bit pricey.
With the noise level only reaching 23 decibels and the computer using just 23 watts of power whilst idle and 36 watts while in use, it is very power friendly.
Tom Ziegmann has an update for those of you who have followed his guide on how to install SharePoint Services 3.0 on Windows Home Server. He has now published a tip on how to change his SharePoint Database Move Scripts if your server name is not "SERVER" which is available here.

Finally out of beta, TV Manager 1.0 is now available for download. The add-in lets you move your recordings to your Windows Home Server for management and storage. With the biggest feature, being the ability to watch your recordings in Media Center as if they were sitting in your Media Center record path.
You can delete recordings from the Windows Home Server Console or by using Media Center and you can also play the recordings on non-Media Center PCs using the Windows Home Server Console or Windows Explorer.
