HP Media Vault mv2100 and mv5100

HP Media Vault

Yikes! The MediaSmart Server has been chopped in half….or has it?

Actually no. It’s the new Linux powered NAS device from HP known as the Media Vault. Available in 2 configurations the entry-level mv2100 comes with a 500Gb hard drive, and the mv5100 has two 500GB or 750GB drives. Additional capacity is available via two USB 2.0 ports and additional drives can be added for RAID 1 capability also. Gigabit Ethernet, and DLNA / UPnP networking (as well as direct-attached mode) are as standard. Both also include 2 GB of offsite, online backup.

Pricing is TBA for the mv5100 but the mv2100 is expected to retail for $299. Both will be available in March.

2 New Knowledge Base Articles

Two new Knowledge base articles have been added for Windows Home Server. The first is How to troubleshoot the “Backup service is not running” error message in Windows Home Server (946339) and covers five different methods to troubleshoot the “Backup service is not running” error message or backup database inconsistency error in WHS.

The second article is The Windows Home Server client connector software cannot find the home server (946412). When you try to install the client connector software on a home computer, the installer tries to find the server machine by connecting to a Web service that is running on the home server. However, in some cases, the discovery process cannot find and connect to it. This problem occurs when Internet Explorer is configured to use a proxy server and the article details a resolution.

HP adding Streaming, Vista 64-bit Support and Anti-Virus

HP Mediasmart Server

HP has got some more enhancements coming to its MediaSmart Server this February for free which will be available via download. The 3 updates include server protection via McAfee Antivirus which will be free for the first seven months. PacketVideo technology will enhance the the media streaming process from MediaSmart Server to other digital media devices in the home and it will also add advanced graphics such as thumbnails of photos, in-menu browsing and album art. And finally Windows 64-bit support will also be added for Vista users.

One of our contributors John Czernek, had this to say:

This raises a few questions that hopefully will be clarified during CES.  Will HP offer the anti-virus to current customers?  And I’m curious if the improved data streaming is some new version of Windows Media Connect.

HP is also launching a lower cost MediaSmart server based on Linux and a MediaSmart Receiver that includes Media Center Extender.  Microsoft probably isn’t too happy with an alternate product offering so soon.  It should be interesting to see how HP positions the two.

Thanks to Nicholas Rayner and John Czernek for the news.

Latest Data Corruption Status

One of the benefits of now being an MVP is that tonight I had the opportunity to take part in the monthly discussion with the WHS Team which highlighted that the data corruption issue which affects some users will NOT effect those using just the one hard drive. So, only those of you using multiple hard drives can be affected, with duplication turned on or off. The team are still working continuously for a fix.

Monitor WHS Events and Auto Reboot Server

How would you like a piece of software that monitors your Application, System, Security and WHS event logs on Home Server, and then sends an alert to your email address or mobile device and then even has the ability to reboot Home Server if a critical system failure is detected.

Well we have info for you on a piece of software that does just that, and did I mention that it is even FREE!

PA Server Monitor

The details are also written to the windows event log and as we have already said, if necessary it also has the ability to reboot Home Server if a critical system failure is detected.

PA Server Monitor Suite runs as a service and has many other useful features as well.
