Building a Home Server with Windows 8

MaximumPC has a guide on how to use Windows 8 as a Home Server:

Saying that Windows 8 is a major shift in strategy for Microsoft is pretty obvious at this point. Between the Metro interface, complete dismissal of the start menu, focus on touch screen devices, and myriad other changes; this is not the Windows of the Bill Gates era. One change which hasn’t received much discussion is the idea of Windows 8 being Microsoft’s next iteration for not only Windows 7, but for Windows Home Server.

Their in-depth guide shows you everything you need to build a Windows 8 home server, including setting up and configuring Storage Spaces, sharing your files using HomeGroup and Libraries and protecting your data by using Windows Backup/Windows 7 File Recovery and File History.

Add-In: StableBit Scanner v2.2.0.2723 BETA

StableBit Scanner Icon

The beta release of StableBit Scanner has a new release:

  • Added "Burst Test". Right click on a disk and click "Burst Test…"
A Burst Test stresses the disk controller for an extending period of time by reading faster than the physical disk is capable of.
This can be used to stress test the entire chain of components leading to disk access such as the disk controller, disk enclosure and cables. One use of this test is to test for disk "drop out" when a disk is under stress.
This test is based on a USB 3.0 testing procedure but is applicable to other technologies as well.
  • Added the ability to ping a disk. Right click on any disk and click "Ping disk".
Expose the "Ping" column to see the response time. The response time is the average time to read 1 MB from the disk for the past 10 seconds. Pinging a disk is also an easy way to visually identify a particular disk. Just look at the disk access light for disk activity every 1 second.
Pinging can also be used to test for disk "drop out". If a ping is interrupted by the disk dropping out, "Error" will be shown in the Ping column in red and pinging will not continue. Unlike burst testing, pinging is very light on system resources.
  • Added ability to designate locations for drives. Each disk now has a ‘Case’ and ‘Bay’ that can be set up in "Disk Settings".
The idea is that each disk is located in some Case at a particular Bay.
Disks can be grouped by bays and sorted by cases. There is also a new location column.
Both cases and bays are free-form text, but bays are numeric-aware in terms of sorting.
  • Added advanced option to turn off WMI SMART queries (Smart_NoWmi).

Alternatives to Windows Home Server

informIT have a list of alternatives to using Windows Home Server.

FreeNAS, Amahi Home Server and TonidoPlug are the three candidates which are taken a look at:

We discussed three different cost-saving alternatives to using Microsoft’s Windows Home Server (WHS):

  • FreeNAS provides basic NAS and media streaming functionality, but is best for more technically inclined individuals.
  • Amahi Home Server provides even more functionality than WHS, and is designed more for the average user.
  • The TonidoPlug costs about the same as the WHS software, but is a computer itself already preinstalled and ready to go.

Storage Spaces a great feature when it works

ArsTechnica have a thorough look at Storage Spaces.

The article does not sound hopeful with a title of "Storage Spaces explained: a great feature, when it works", but there is hope in Drive Extender’s latest incarnation.

Storage Pool Warnings

Whilst trying Storage Spaces out ArsTechnica suggests that it needs more warning signs, and whilst performance may be a drag we must remember that a future update or service pack will hopefully make things a little smoother.

The Purpose of the "Do Not Cover This Hole" on Hard Drives

You have have ever wondered the purpose of the "Do not cover this hole" on hard drives then we have the answer for you.

The Purpose of the Do Not Cover This Hole on Hard Drives

On many hard drives, there’s a stern text warning to “not cover this hole”, sometimes adding that doing so will void the warranty. But what is its purpose?

The hole allows for equalization of air pressure between the inside and outside of the drive. While it is not a complete pass-through of outside air into the HDD internals, there is a filter inside the hole that allows the air pressure to equalize. If the drive were completely sealed, operating at altitudes significantly different from those the drive was manufactured and sealed at, it would cause problems and increase the likelihood of catastrophic failures. This system works in much the same way as the Eustachian tubes that allow our ears internal pressures to equalize, preventing the explosion of our ear drums.

More explanations are available from the How To Geek.

Update User Display Names in WS2012 Essentials

When you add a user on the WS2012 Essentials Dashboard, it does not populate the Display Name of the account object, and it also sets the Description to the same value as the username. Luckily for us Microsoft MVP Robert Pearman has made a PowerShell script which will take a users First and Surname and convert those into the Displayname for you.

RobertPearman Avatar

This will also make the Windows 8 user experience a little neater, as they wont see there Username Twice at the logon screen etc.

More info including the script can be found here.
