My Server App for Windows Phone for WS2012 Essentials

The Windows Server Essentials and Small Business Server Blog gives us a run down on the My Server app for windows phone for Windows Server 2012 Essentials (that’s a mouth full!).

My Server App for WS2012e

Available now in the Windows Phone store the My Server app will allow you to view the following information from Windows Server 2012 Essentials:

  • Server management and monitoring, enabling you to manage alerts, devices, or accounts.
  • Access to shared folders and files.
  • Keeps a history of the files that users have recently accessed so that they can reopen these files without navigating to a folder.
  • A centralized library for media playback – The streaming logic has been we have optimized to deliver a better media experience over networks with differing bandwidths.

Admins can also:

  • Check alerts by using My Server and ignore or repair them accordingly.
  • Disable or enable any user account that you think is not in good status.
  • Change the password of user accounts when necessary.
  • Keep track of devices that have joined your server domain.
  • Start or stop the backup process for any device online.

Lots more details are available in the following post on the Windows Server Essentials and Small Business Server Blog.

Remove Default Shares in WS2012 Essentials

In Windows Server 2012 Essentials there is no way to remove the default shares from within the Dashboard – But there is a workaround.

If you are fed up with the default "Company" or "Recorded TV" share for example, the following will get rid of any default shares which you no longer require. In the following example "Recorded TV":

  1. In Explorer, stop sharing the folder.
  2. Remove the registry entry with "Name=Recorded Tv" in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows server\Storage Service\Folders.
  3. Stop the service "Windows Server Storage Service" and then re-start it.
  4. It’s up to you if you want to remove the folder or not in Explorer.

Virivault Online Backup from ViridianPC

ViridianPC have launched Virivault their online backup service.

The Virivault backup client provides the facility to backup your server to both a local target on your network (such an a NAS or even a second server), and to secure off-site storage which is provided by Amazon’s S3 cloud storage system, with storage facilities in North America and Europe. The software can be configured with separate backup jobs, so for example large volumes of data like a video collection can be backed up locally, where as smaller and possibly irreplaceable data like office documents and photos can be stored off-site.

The backup client even supports continuous backups, so files are copied to the off-site storage as they are created or modified for near-instant protection.

A monthly subscription costs from £5 with a free 30 day trial available.

Windows Azure Online Backup Integration Module for WS2012e Released

Microsoft today announced that they have released the Windows Azure Online Backup Integration Module for Windows Server 2012 Essentials.

Windows Azure Online Backup is a cloud-based backup solution that enables your server data to be backed up to and recovered from an off-premises datacenter (also known as the cloud). To reduce storage and bandwidth utilization, Windows Azure Online Backup performs block-level incremental backup and to increase security, the data is compressed and encrypted before leaving your server.

Here’s what they had to say:

“This module allows you to more easily configure and manage Windows Azure Online Backup from within the familiar Windows Server 2012 Essentials Dashboard to provide a seamless backup and restore experience. The integration module complements your traditional local server backup (where the data is backed up to an on-premises external drive) by using the Windows Azure service to protect critical data on the server in the cloud.”

For details on how to get and implement the Windows Azure Online Backup Integration Module, head on over to Microsoft’s Windows Server Essentials and Small Business Server Blog.

Paul Thurrott Chooses Windows Server 2012 Essentials

Paul Thurrott is choosing Windows Server 2012 Essentials for his home office after comparing it to WHS 2011 on his HP ProLiant MicroServer N40L.

…if you can put up with a bit of complexity – and the cost, what you get in return in a real server.

Paul takes us through his setup and also explains to us the differences between using Windows 8 compared to Essentials.

Its a great read which you can find here.

MyMovies for WHS 2011 and Integration

PCDoc tells us his experiences on using MyMovies on his freshly installed WHS 2011 integrating it with his iPad and Windows Media Center:

“I really like this application and if you’re a movie fan as I am, this app could almost single handedly justify the purchase of a tablet.  It is a perfect example of cross platform integration that allows you to use an IOS device to control your movie collection that is stored on your WHS, and played back on your Windows Media Center.”
