Add-In: StableBit DrivePool v1.2.0.6659 BETA

StableBit DrivePool, the Drive Extender type add-in for WHS 2011 users has had an update.

Stablebit_drivepool_M4_logo

Version 1.2.0.6659 BETA has a new more flexible file placement and balancing system. Here’s the full change log:

  • Added visual markers on the DrivePool -> Disks tab to indicate where the balancer wants to attempt to reshuffle your files.
  • Added animated arrows on the DrivePool -> Disks tab that show what the balancer is doing in real-time.
  • [D] Fixed system crash under some rare conditions due to the timing of I/O operations.
  • [D] Upgraded the pool balancing system.
        – Now uses a layered system of balancers.
        – Each balancer is responsible for implementing its own balancing algorithm.
        – A combined balancing model is built by querying all the balancers, where the upper
balancers have priority over the lower balancers.
        – Each balancer can:
            – Schedule file moves for protected and un-protected files, separately.
            – Set up real time file placement limits on any drive.
                – Two types of limits are supported, hard limits and soft limits.
        – There are 3 built-in balancers:
            – Duplication Space Optimizer – A perfectly accurate duplication space optimizer that figures out if there
are any files blocking the optimal use of disk space for duplicated file placement. It only moves files
              when it is absolutely necessary.
            – Prevent Drive Overfill – If any drive becomes full, and there is disk space on other drives, move
some of the files to the other drives. This balancer comes with a bunch of settings letting you
set up the appropriate balancing limits.
            – File Placement Limiter (new) – Control where new files will be placed by the real-time file placement
algorithm. This balancer comes with settings that let you choose which file types go onto which drives.
The algorithm sets up a "soft limit" which will be broken if all of the drives in the system are "full".
"Full" is defined in the settings pane and defaults to 90% full.
        – There is a simple API for building 3rd party balancers (exposed in DrivePool.Integration.dll – not enabled yet).
        – Each balancer can be enabled / disable or rearranged in the stack by the user.
        – A balancer can come with a WPF user control for any settings that have to be exposed to the user.
        – Each balancer stores its settings in a settings state object that is automatically serialized / de-serialized
for the balancer by the system.

As well as for WHS 2011, Update Rollup 3 (UR3) has also been made available for both SBS 2011 Essentials and Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials.

  • 2705117 Update Rollup 3 for Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials is available

  • 2705129 Client-side update package details

Update Rollup 3 (UR3) for WHS 2011 is Available

UR3 has been made available for WHS 2011. This update rollup contains server-side fixes. After installation, the client-side package is installed on all Windows client computers automatically.

UR3 for WHS 2011

You can now configure the Launchpad to start in a minimized state which was a nuisance for most users. This can be accomplished by selecting the "Always minimize the Launchpad at start" check box.

Major issues that are resolved by this update

  • Issue 1 – When you try to connect a Windows 8-based client computer to Windows Home Server 2011, you receive an "Unexpected Error" message.
  • Issue 2 – On a computer that is running Windows 8 and that has Internet Explorer 10 installed, thumbnails for Remote Web Access (RWA) media files and folders are not displayed correctly. Specifically, the thumbnails are displayed as black squares.
  • Issue 3 – Assume that you connect a Windows 8-based client computer to a Windows Home Server 2011-based server, and then set the client backup property to "Automatically wake this computer up from sleep or hibernation to run a scheduled backup." In this situation, the backup is not successful if the client computer is asleep or in hibernation.
  • Issue 4 – You receive "Computer Monitoring Errors" alerts every 30 minutes. The following "Computer Monitoring Errors" alerts are fixed in this update rollup: •Alerts that are triggered by client synchronization time-out
•Alerts that are triggered by stale computer records that belong to client computers that were removed
•Alerts that occur when the router manufacturer information is not retrieved
•Alerts that occur when an RWA Domain socket connection is aborted
In addition, the description of alerts will include the name of the failed component, to improve troubleshooting.
  • Issue 5 – You receive the following incorrect warning alert when UPnP is not available on the router:

The router is not configured correctly for Anywhere Access. You must configure the router to remotely access the network

  • Issue 6 – Watson crashes because of an error in Wssbackup.exe. When this issue occurs, client backup may not work correctly, and you may receive alerts or error messages.
  • Issue 7 – Performance improvements are made to Client File and Folder Restore.
  • Issue 8 – When you try to download multiple files from RWA on a single request, the operation fails.
  • Issue 9 – Some health alerts do not work in Windows 8. For example, the "The Network Firewall is turned off" and "Virus protection is turned off, not installed, or not up-to-date" alerts do not work.

Known issues

  • Issue 1 – If you have installed Update Rollup 3 Beta, you must uninstall it (for more information about how to do this, go to the "How to uninstall Update Rollup 3 Beta" section).
  • Issue 2 – Client computers may restart after you apply Update Rollup 3. Before this restart happens, some functionality may not work.

Information on UR3 for WHS 2011 is in Microsoft Article 2705118 whilst information on the client-side update package are in Microsoft Article 2705129.

Add-In: Drive Bender v1.3.6.0

Drive Bender Logo

Version 1.3.6.0 of Drive Bender has been released for Windows Home Server 2011, Windows SBS Essentials 2011 and Storage Server 2008 R2 users.

Here is the change log for this latest release:

  • Update: Some branding changes to the client interface.
  • Update: The settings option has been moved from the advanced tab to the main interface (lower left).
  • Bug fix: As of Drive Bender v1.3.5.0 a drive removal or a drive swap operation will dismount all pool mount point for the duration of the operation. This is by design, however the notification of this dismount is not displayed, and as a result some users may not realize that this is intended.
  • Bug fix: As of Drive Bender v1.3.5.0 a drive removal or a drive swap operation will dismount all pool mount point for the duration of the operation. This is by design, however if Drive Bender is set to manage system drive letters, then it may assign the dismounted mount point’s drive letter to the drive removed, this could cause the mount point not to come back up.
  • Added: strict driver version check now performed. If there is a mismatch, an error is logged.
  • Update: By default CRC validation of files moved or copied is now disabled (effects duplication, drive removal and drive swapping). This does not effect uses that have explicitly changed this seeing. This can be re-enabled via the settings.
  • Bug fix: Opening the Advanced windows under the WHS addin (classic interface) can cause the dashboard to crash.
  • Bug fix: The duplication tools could fail when running under the WHS classic theme.
  • Update: Some additions and changes to themes.
  • Bug fix: The map pooled drive option under setting was not working correctly.
  • Bug fix: The progress on some drive management operations did not show correctly.

More information on Drive Bender is available from here.
